A new Fulda promenade: Rotenburg's green oasis shines!

There is currently a lot of activity in Rotenburg an der Fulda, and not without reason: Mayor Marcus Weber opened the new Fulda promenade today. This invites locals and visitors alike to enjoy the beautiful landscape on the banks of the Fulda and to spend time in the freshly designed surroundings. The R1 cycle path, which runs directly along the promenade, is also heavily used. The region is now not only more beautiful, but also more environmentally friendly, as the project is part of an overarching urban development that is aimed at sustainability. East Hesse News reports that the redesign of the area between the twin town bridge and the Fulda weir cost around 2.5 million euros, although fortunately 66% of the costs were covered by funding.

But these impressive changes go far beyond just a new promenade. As part of the urban development program, which was launched in late summer 2023, new cycle paths, staircases, outdoor seating areas and natural watercourses will also be created. A highlight is the renovated historic city wall, which gives the whole thing a special charm. Timo Herrmann from BBZ Landschaftsarchitekten emphasizes the successful collaboration between all those involved, although planning for the project began in 2020 and was delayed by numerous floods.

Funding from federal and state governments

The city of Rotenburg will also receive a historic grant of 2.7 million euros from the federal program “Adaptation of Urban Spaces to Climate Change” for the redesign of the north bank of the Fulda. This support is the highest the city has ever received. In this context, Mayor Christian Grunwald thanked the MER and its managing director Torben Schäfer for their support in submitting the application HNA reported.

A total of 3.2 million euros are planned for the redesign of the north bank by 2024, with the city's own contribution falling to just 500,000 euros as a result of the funding. Planned measures include, among other things, the creation of new plant islands and the planting of native trees as well as various leisure opportunities that invite you to linger. The importance of urban redevelopment for the quality of life of Rotenburg citizens is also emphasized by District Administrator Torsten Warnecke. It is a great added value for the region and a place to learn, relax and celebrate.

A step into the future

The ambitious urban development program in Hesse aims to find sustainable and integrated solutions for urban spaces. This initiative is supported by various funding programs, such as Hesse state government emphasized. The challenges arising from climate change and demographic changes, for example, require clever concepts and cooperation on many levels.

The redesign of the Fulda bank in Rotenburg will create a wonderful oasis in the heart of the city, which will permanently change the cityscape. True to the motto: There’s something going on! Citizens can look forward to many wonderful hours on the Fulda, be it a walk, cycling or simply meeting friends in a newly designed open space.
