Heat and risk of thunderstorms: Tips for safe hiking in Oestrich-Winkel!
Oestrich-Winkel, in the picturesque Rheingau-Taunus, will be all about nature this coming weekend: numerous hikers are expected to discover the beauty of the Flötenweg. But the anticipation could be dampened by a heat wave, which, in combination with thunderstorms, also poses considerable risks. Mayor Carsten Sinß urgently points out the need to act cautiously in such extreme weather. “Safe behavior is a must to survive the hottest days,” he explains. Wiesbadener Kurier reports that a wise approach to the heat will be necessary in the next few days.
In recent years, heat stress has increased in Germany, which means that the number of “hot days” with temperatures above 30 °C has increased. Particularly affected are more vulnerable groups such as older people, the chronically ill and small children, who can suffer more from the heat. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief therefore gives advice that should be followed in order to protect yourself and others well.
Tips for hot days
Keep a good hand when drinking: Sufficient fluids – mineral water, diluted juices or herbal teas – should always be at hand. Loose cotton clothing keeps you cool, and to be on the safe side, you should wear a hat to avoid the risk of sunstroke. It is advisable to avoid the blazing sun, especially in the midday heat. Children and seniors also need special protection. You can ensure that they are well looked after, especially through regular visits and telephone calls. The heat not only affects your mood, but also your health: overheating can put a strain on the cardiovascular system.
According to the reports of Federal Ministry of Health Municipalities and states are required to create heat action plans in order to actively protect the population. These plans include measures tailored to local circumstances and could, for example, include steps to create more green spaces in cities or information campaigns. The goal is clear: better protection against the heat waves that are hitting us more and more frequently.
Don't underestimate the risk of thunderstorms
With the announced heat wave, the risk of thunderstorms will also increase. Lightning strikes and flying objects are potential dangers. Anyone who is out and about should make sure to keep escape routes clear - in an emergency, every second can be crucial. The best recommendations are to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and not to engage in risky activities outdoors.
If temperatures feel like they are rising to over 38°C, it is important to be vigilant: the German Weather Service has issued clear warnings and those affected should be prepared accordingly. The heat can't always cool down overnight, making the situation even more precarious.
But don't panic: with good preparation and an understanding of the dangers, you can enjoy the hot days and get through your summer adventures safely. We are not beginners in this country, and with a little caution and the necessary knowledge, even the most beautiful hike can be easily accomplished in the heat!
