Hesse remains the holiday destination: 15.6 million tourists in 2024!

Hesse continues to enjoy great popularity as a tourist destination. In 2024, almost 15.6 million guests came to Hesse, which corresponds to a pleasing increase of 4 percent compared to the previous year. These dynamic figures come from the Hessian State Statistical Office, which also states that the number of overnight stays increased by 3 percent to almost 34.8 million. In this context, the large cities and regions such as the Main-Taunus district, Offenbach and Frankfurt, which recorded significant growth, should be particularly highlighted.

The Main-Taunus district leads with an impressive increase of 16 percent in guest numbers, followed by Offenbach am Main with 12 percent and Frankfurt am Main with 7 percent. It is equally pleasing that all Hessian administrative districts, with the exception of Kassel, can report an increase in guests. A look at the origins of the visitors shows that 77 percent of the guests come from Germany - that corresponds to 12.1 million people. Foreign tourists account for 23 percent, with most visitors coming from the United States, followed by the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Special attractions and length of stay

The average length of stay in Hesse was 2.2 days in 2024. This is a slight decrease compared to 2023, when guests stayed for 2.3 days. The Bergstrasse, the Edersee and Schlitz im Vogelsberg are particularly popular holiday destinations, even if more precise figures for individual destinations are not specified. Overall, overnight stays by domestic guests remained at around 27.3 million, an increase of 2 percent, while foreign guests counted over 7.4 million overnight stays, an increase of 7 percent.

The figures for Hesse are only 2 percent below the level of 2019, the last year before the pandemic. A promising forecast expects around 1.0 million guests for January 2025, with a 4 percent decline in overnight stays compared to the previous year. The Hessian tourism players are always striving to improve their offers and make the guests' stay even more pleasant. The Hessian State Statistical Office regularly carries out surveys to collect and analyze the relevant data on arrivals and overnight stays, which provide useful insights for those involved in tourism.

Cultural and tourist highlights

Hesse not only remains a popular travel destination, but also impresses with a variety of cultural highlights and leisure opportunities. In addition to the large urban centers, it is primarily the diverse landscapes and traditions that attract tourists. From historic old towns to spectacular nature parks – the offering is wide-ranging. Ultimately, the key tourism figures, which are summarized in regularly published statistics, have contributed to Hesse's continued popularity as an attractive travel destination.
