Rolf Lutz: A place for an honorable memory in Florstadt!
A new square in Florstadt commemorates an outstanding personality in the region. TheRolf Lutz Square, named after honorary citizen Rolf Lutz, was ceremoniously inaugurated at the intersection of Sodenweg and Wetteraustraße. After all, this is a “stroke of luck for the Wetterau”, like that Frankfurter Neue Presse reported.
Rolf Lutz, who lived from 1939 to 2022, leaves behind a rich legacy in the educational and cultural landscape of the Wetterau. Active as a teacher and educator, he has also launched numerous projects as an author, archivist and moderator, including storytelling cafés and village tours. This made him an indispensable figure in the community; his commitment over the decades was exemplary. “An image of compassion and appreciation” was how local mayor Horst Schmidt described Lutz during the inauguration, where the new memorial plaque also provided information about his life and work.
Volunteering and awards
Rolf Lutz was tirelessly active and was particularly involved in the area of local history. He maintained an extensive archive with documents, pictorial material and everyday objects that reflect his comprehensive documentation and connection to the region. His life's work also received recognition through prestigious awards; so he received it on May 17, 2018 - on his 79th birthdayHessian Order of Meritfor his extraordinary commitment, which was suggested by Rosel Schleicher, the former president of the Hessian Gymnastics Association. This award recognizes achievements in art, culture, education and international understanding. Lutz is also a recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit.
The Hessian Order of Merit, which has been awarded since 1989, exists in two levels: as an Order of Merit and as an Order of Merit on Ribbon. The number of medal holders is limited, which underlines the high recognition of this award, as well as the Hessian State Chancellery explained.
A role model for the community
Born in Gießen, Lutz was a highlight of Wetterau's educational history. He was not only a teacher, but also the principal of the Saalburg School in Bad Vilbel, and devoted himself to archive work and writing for a long time. Many projects such as exhibitions about Martin Luther or the Reformation anniversary bear his signature. Even after his official retirement, he did not let himself be dissuaded from his commitment and continues to plan new projects.
His understanding of people of all ages makes him a role model in municipal society. His initiative to bring people together increases in value, especially in times characterized by individualism. Lutz served on the board of workers' welfare for over 40 years and actively supported citizens' assistance.
“There is something to be said for the future of Wetterau,” one could conclude when one looks at the results of his work. From now on, the new Rolf-Lutz-Platz will stand as a reminder of a great honorary citizen and his achievements.
