New magistrate in Karben: water supply and daycare centers in focus!
A lot happened in Karben on September 8, 2025, because Thomas Görlich was ceremoniously sworn in at the city council meeting and is now a member of the city council. This brings a breath of fresh air into urban politics, while Manfred Winter has been said goodbye and is heading to northern Hesse. A change that could also bring new perspectives for the city.
Another important topic that the city council dealt with concerns the drinking water supply in Karben. It was decided to install two new drinking water fountains in the city. One of these fountains will be located in the green area of the fountain district, while the other will be located near the bike park or skate park. This is in line with the trend of promoting community drinking water sources to facilitate access to free, high-quality drinking water. Interested citizens can easily check where the nearest water points are using Watrify's interactive map, which lists over 181,000 drinking fountains and water dispensers in Europe. This card is free and does not require an app or registration, which makes it particularly user-friendly.
Daycare plans and challenges
There is also news from the area of early childhood education in Karben. The first permits for the “Fuchsbau” daycare center in Petterweil have been received and operations are scheduled to begin in September. Meanwhile, the daycare center on Pfarrer-Flick-Straße was renamed “Colourful”, and the Okarben facility is now called “Sonnenschein” – both daycare centers have a total of three groups. However, there are still difficulties with the “Glückskinder” daycare center in Kloppenheim, which is closed due to a fire. The renovation costs are estimated at around 500,000 euros, and demolition and new construction are under discussion.
The city is also trying to increase citizens' sense of security. Since July 1st, the city police have received reinforcements in order to be able to better control illegal parking, for example. An additional night service should remedy this and ensure more order.
Political debates and new housing projects
The meeting was also politically exciting: two proposals from the CDU sparked lively discussions. A test application for serial construction in Karben was approved, despite resistance from the SPD. In addition, an application to purchase a property on Selzerbachweg for an apartment building was accepted with eight abstentions. These projects could provide important impetus for housing in the city.
So you can see: a lot is happening in Karben and the developments could be important for the citizens both in terms of quality of life and in terms of infrastructure. Whether it's the new drinking water fountains, the daycare projects or the political decisions - we're investing in the future here and that's a good thing!
Incidentally, there are comprehensive statistics on the drinking water supply in Germany that show that access to high-quality drinking water is guaranteed in most communities. This is partly due to the various initiatives that aim to improve access to drinking water in cities. You can find more information about this on the [Federal Environment Ministry] website (https://www.bundesumweltministerium.de/themen/wasser-und-binnengewaesser/statistics/statistics-trinkwasserbedarf).
