Bad Nauheim relies on an integrated climate adaptation concept for 2045!
In Bad Nauheim, the course was set for a greener future on September 18th: the city council unanimously approved the Integrated Climate Adaptation Concept (iKAK). This is a significant step to optimize preparations for the consequences of climate change in the region, the city administration reports on its website. Mayor Klaus Kreß emphasizes that this concept serves as a strategic basis to sustainably promote the safety and well-being of citizens.
The city administration is pursuing a holistic approach that is intended to create the foundations for a climate-resilient health city in Bad Nauheim in the coming years. Head of department Heiko Heinzel emphasizes that the modern measures are not only intended to promote environmental protection, but also to ensure a city worth living in. The analysis of the climatic conditions in Hesse plays a central role here, as heat, water and health in particular are among the most important topics of the iKAK.
Diverse measures and priorities
The iKAK includes comprehensive details and runs over 130 pages, according to Oliver Jenschke, the city's climate adaptation manager. With measures such as tree planting, green roofs and the renaturation of water bodies, a clear focus is placed on creating urban greenery. A particularly pressing issue is the so-called heat island effect: in many parts of the city it is significantly hotter on hot days than in other areas. Therefore, special recreational areas are being created for citizens.
Heat prevention for vulnerable groups is particularly important. The concept also considers small but effective actions such as donating trees and unsealing, which are intended to counteract the risk of flooding. In order to actively involve citizens, there were already numerous opportunities for participation, such as workshops and online forums, where anyone interested could contribute their ideas.
Sustainable implementation until 2045
The implementation of the pre-prioritized measures will start in October 2025 and will be funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment. A comprehensive interim evaluation after ten years is planned to check the progress of the concept and make adjustments if necessary. Running until 2045, this important project is intended to pave the way for climate-adapted urban design, which could serve as a model for other communities in Hesse.
As part of the iKAK, the complete concept will soon be published on the city's website so that all citizens are fully informed and can actively participate in the implementation. This well-thought-out climate closure concept shows that Bad Nauheim is ready to resolutely face the challenges of climate change and at the same time ensure quality of life for its citizens.
