Street angel in Hanau: New sleeping places planned for the homeless!
A lot is happening in Hanau for people without a permanent address. A new street angel project led by club boss Sabine Assmann is intended to offer protection in the cold months. Their idea is to provide sleeping quarters for up to 20 homeless people in order to offer them a warm and safe place to stay overnight. The initiative was inspired by a radio report that reported on a similar overnight offer in Frankfurt, where 45 men are currently staying in the Weißfrauen Church. The aim is to offer those in need “low-threshold” accommodation that is easily accessible without strict requirements.
The Strassenengel association, which has been fighting tirelessly for homeless people since it was founded by Assmann in 2015, relies on creative solutions. “We are looking for suitable properties, such as halls or empty churches,” says Assmann. However, the idea of using the Jahnhalle as a location had to be rejected. Instead, the street angels have plans for accommodation that will not offer 24-hour care, but will be equipped with sanitary facilities and a “relaxation pool” with warm drinks. One of Assmann's central concerns is to reduce barriers for homeless people, especially those with dogs.
Cooperation with the city of Hanau
In addition to the new accommodation option, the city of Hanau and the Strassenengel association have launched a cooperation that aims to improve the care of homeless people. Since May 2025, there has been a permanent contact person in the shared accommodation at Ludwigstrasse 60 in Steinheim who not only communicates with the residents, but also has experience of being homeless himself. Mayor Dr. Maximilian Bieri emphasizes that accommodation in Steinheim has played a central role for over 20 years. “People should not only have a roof over their heads, but also a place where they can be seen,” says Bieri.
The city of Hanau is supporting this project financially and has already scheduled an employee from the city's homeless authority to ensure even better connections to the residents. “The cooperation is an important step,” adds Assmann, emphasizing the long-standing collaboration with the Ecumenical Homeless Aid in the Franziskushaus and the Lichtblick Foundation. The goal of our joint efforts is to break down barriers for residents and provide information directly on site.
Support and help
To implement the new sleeping places, the street angels rely on the support of volunteers. Assmann is looking for committed helpers who can provide support on site in the evenings. There is also a particular need for camp beds for accommodation. “We want the homeless people in Hanau to find a place where they can rest,” says Assmann, summarizing their mission. It should be emphasized that her tireless work in social work will soon be recognized with the Federal Cross of Merit.
The Strassenengel e.V. will celebrate a special event in July 2025: their tenth anniversary with a courtyard festival on July 2nd, which aims to draw even more attention to their important work.
