Frankfurt Airport is booming: 5.6 million passengers in May 2025!
The aviation industry remains on a positive course. In May 2025, on Frankfurt Airport 5.6 million travelers were welcomed, an increase of 1.8 percent compared to the previous year. This means that Frankfurt remains an important contact point for travelers and an important hub for international air traffic.
The statistics show a positive development: the cargo volume has also increased, by 4.4 percent to 178,977 tons. This makes it clear that not only passengers but also cargo frequent the airport. A total of 42,255 flight movements (takeoffs and landings) were recorded, which corresponds to an increase of 5.7 percent. In addition, the maximum take-off weights reached around 2.6 million tons, which is 4.4 percent more than in May of the previous year.
International developments
The joy of increased passenger volumes is not limited to Frankfurt. About the international participating airports Things are looking equally positive for Fraport. Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia recorded a significant increase of 13.5 percent, with a total of 151,849 passengers. Brazilian airports such as Fortaleza and Porto Alegre can look forward to an increase of 132.3 percent, although this is also due to a special event - Porto Alegre was closed due to floods in the same month last year.
In Peru, Lima Airport is doing well and is reporting around 2.2 million passengers for May 2025, which corresponds to an increase of 6.3 percent. The 14 Greek Fraport airports are also faced with an increase of 1.0 percent to a total of 3.7 million passengers. The Twin Star airports Burgas and Varna in Bulgaria are pleased with an increase of 24.1 percent, with a total of 222,806 travelers. Only Antalya Airport in Turkey remains stable, with 3.9 million passengers, which corresponds to zero growth.
Overall balance
In total, the Fraport Group recorded around 16.8 million passengers at all airports it actively manages in the reporting month of May 2025. This represents an increase of 6.0 percent compared to the same period last year. In 2024, Frankfurt Airport remained the leader in international competition with around 61.6 million passengers and continues to be in high demand: the most popular travel destinations are in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy.
Some figures from 2024 show that Frankfurt is at the forefront of hub connectivity worldwide. Despite an already high passenger volume of 61.6 million in 2024, it is still 12.7 percent below the pre-crisis level of 2019. The strength in long-haul traffic to North America, the Far East and South America is clearly noticeable and shows that demand is lively and continues to grow.
The aviation industry continues to recover and a good hand in choosing travel destinations also seems to be paying off. In the coming months, we will be excited to see how the numbers will develop and what trends will emerge in air traffic. Stay tuned for the latest developments around the Airport traffic and the global airports!
