Children learn fire protection: An unforgettable day with the fire department!

The elementary school students in grades 3a and 3b at the Einhardschule in Steinbach will have fond memories of an exciting morning. On July 3, 2025, the children had the opportunity to learn everything about fire protection in a playful way, in close cooperation with the Steinbach fire department. They experienced first-hand how important it is to deal with fire correctly and what role the fire brigade plays in our society. The kids welcomed the event with curiosity and enthusiasm and, last but not least, they were very proud to be able to put the newly learned knowledge into practice.

The fire department members guided the students and showed them, for example, the differences between professional and volunteer fire departments. The simulation in the smoke house was particularly impressive, as it taught the children practical behavior in the event of a fire. “It is important that children are not afraid of firefighters,” explained the emergency services as they demonstrated the breathing apparatus to the little ones. The students were also able to try on fire department clothing and even climb into a fire department vehicle, which was certainly a highlight for many.

Active stations and fire protection diplomas

The exciting activities also included playful stations where the children could use a spray lance to spray tennis balls from pylons and hit flaps on the syringe house. Such exercises are not only entertaining, but also promote awareness of the work of the fire department. At the end of the morning, all participants received a “fire protection diploma” and were rewarded with an ice cream – a perfect end to an educational day.

The Steinbach fire brigade would like to thank the Odenwaldkreis district fire brigade association, which provided the fire protection education mobile, and of course also the Einhardschule for their cooperation. Such initiatives are important not only to educate children about fire safety, but also to show them how they should behave in potentially dangerous situations.

Fire safety education as a community task

The initiative of the Frankfurt City Mini Fire Department also shows how important it is to give children early knowledge of how to deal with fire. This is aimed at children aged 4 to 10 and aims to prepare them for life-threatening situations. Here, knowledge about the fire brigade and the correct behavior in an emergency are imparted. However, targeted fire safety education is essential not only in cities but also in rural regions in order to sensitize children to the topic at an early stage.

Proper handling of fire is crucial. Experts emphasize that the attraction fire has on children often leads to dangerous experimentation. Therefore, fire safety education should ideally take place in schools and kindergartens or even in the home environment in order to provide children with the best possible support. Adults who work with children have a key role to play here. Fire safety education should be systematically promoted and implemented together with teachers, educators and firefighters so that children are not only informed but also safe in dealing with fire.
