Daycare expansion in Rendel: costs explode, playground remains!
On July 4, 2025, a group of around 35 interested citizens met in Rendel for a site visit, which was organized by the local advisory board. The meeting point was the “Himmelsströmer” daycare center, where important structural changes are pending. These changes are planned for the end of August or beginning of September and are intended to expand the daycare from four to seven groups. In order to bridge the time until completion, a container solution will be set up from September. Construction is estimated to take 1.5 to 2 years.
However, the costs for the renovation work have increased: from the original 3.75 million euros to an estimated 4 to 5 million euros. The new building is planned to have two floors, with additional storage rooms and charging stations for electric strollers. It is particularly pleasing that the existing playground will be retained. However, there are concerns because a glass container is misused as a place for bulky waste and the disposal of bottles causes dissatisfaction.
Problems with the Rendeler Hof
Another topic that came up during the site inspection was the renovation of the “Rendeler Hof”, which has been pending for six years. The owner is unknown and the ongoing problems are evident: weeds are spreading, causing strollers to move onto the street. In addition, an open construction site creates dangers in the area. Residents of Stauffenbergstrasse and Klein-Karbener-Strasse reported dangerous exits.
In order to increase traffic safety, a proposal was made to refresh the no-parking lanes and create new parking zones to reduce speed. Other concerns include the urgently needed total renovation of the playground on Goerdeler Strasse with projected costs of around 200,000 euros for large playground equipment and 20,000 euros for smaller ones.
Cemetery care and satisfaction
Another concern of the site visit was cemetery maintenance, which costs the city of Karben 385,000 euros annually, 40% of which goes to Rendel. The goal is to increase the coverage level for cemetery maintenance to 50% by 2027. Despite the costs, citizens are generally satisfied with the care of the cemetery.
In addition, an application for the planting of 2-3 tall trees in Obergasse was discussed. Speed measurements on the same street have shown that hardly anyone drives faster than 35 km/h, which reassures residents. The old town hall remains a popular destination as it is home to a midwife's practice and a local library, which receives 800 visitors and 2,000 loans per year.
The planned structural measures are in line with the legal basis for the construction and equipment of daycare centers, as set out in the German Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG). According to the requirements, risks to the health and safety of employees and children of kindergarten age must be avoided. This also includes the safety of playground equipment, which must correspond to the current state of the art, as can be seen from the DGUV guidelines. In the coming months it will be exciting to see how these challenges are addressed and whether the long-term goals can be achieved.
