Heat wave and risk of severe weather: extreme weather in Offenbach and Hanau!
On Friday, June 13th, Hesse is facing a heat wave that will not only cause humid days, but could also pose health challenges. The German Weather Service (DWD) has already issued a heat warning and temperatures could reach up to 34 degrees Celsius in Offenbach and Hanau. While people enjoy spending time outdoors, one should be aware of the risks that such hot days can pose. The DWD points out that these high temperatures can be particularly harmful to the health of older people and those in need of care.
Highs of between 26 and 31 degrees Celsius are expected on Thursday, accompanied by a light breeze from the east to southeast. On Friday nights it will be pleasantly mild in southern Hesse, with temperatures around 17 degrees, while in other regions it will be more colorful and temperatures could be between 12 and 15 degrees. However, the weather will slowly change over the weekend - especially with a view to Saturday.
Prepare for storms
Saturday promises an abrupt change in the weather. With temperatures of 30 to 34 degrees and the risk of violent thunderstorms, you should prepare yourself. The forecasts indicate that the day will initially start sunny, but cloud fields will then become more widespread and bring with them the potential for showers, intense thunderstorms and squalls. The DWD emphasizes that thunderstorm cells are expected in humid regions from the afternoon onwards, which could increase in intensity. Constant attention to the weather situation is therefore advisable.
The situation is similar in parts of Baden-Württemberg. Here too, the heat can cause local dangers, especially in the southern Upper Rhine and Hegau regions, where values of up to 32 degrees could be reached. The DWD warns not only about the heat in these areas, but also about high UV values between 8 and 9, which should encourage susceptible people to stay in the shade at lunchtime. This makes it all the more important to protect yourself adequately from the sun.
Health risks in view
Heat is not only uncomfortable, it can also pose a health risk. According to the Federal Environment Agency, “hot days” and “tropical nights”, i.e. nights with temperatures above 20 degrees, are more likely to occur the more global warming progresses. Elevated values are increasingly observed in urban areas, where the heat island effect is more evident. The difference here can be up to 10 degrees, which can be particularly risky for older people or people with previous illnesses.
In 2019, for example, around 15,600 additional people died in Germany due to heat stress. This development is worrying and shows how important preventive measures and safety instructions are. Persistently high temperatures not only make life outdoors more difficult, but also increase the risk of health problems, which is why the right behavior is crucial in these days and weeks.
In summary, as the heat wave signals the start of a warm summer weekend, potential severe weather and health challenges lie ahead. It is wise to prepare for the changes and take the necessary precautions. So stay informed and healthy!
