New construction of the main station bridge in Hanau: closure from today!
A big step for the transport infrastructure in Hanau: The construction of the new main station bridge is entering the next phase. From today, July 10, 2025, Auheimer Straße between Westerburgstraße and the construction site will be partially closed. This measure is expected to last until the end of 2025, while the project itself will last until 2027. In the future, traffic from Großauheim towards Hafenplatz and Steinheim will be redirected via Rodgaustraße and Kinzigheimer Weg, while the connection from Hafenplatz remains possible via Westerburgstraße and Auheimer Straße as a one-way street. The construction project has already led to some changes here that will impact daily traffic.
The old bridge, which was 120 meters long and weighed 4,500 tons and was built in 1958, was demolished at the beginning of the year because renovation was no longer possible. As the city of Hanau reports, the demolition was more complicated than the new building itself because detailed preparation was necessary. Noise development is to be expected during the demolition work, which is why access to the cordoned off area is prohibited for safety reasons.
The largest infrastructure project in decades
With a total budget of 56 million euros, the construction of the new main station bridge is the largest construction project in Hanau in decades. Around half of the total costs will be borne by Deutsche Bahn, while the state of Hesse will provide around 18 million euros. The new bridge will consist of two parts, 40 and 52 meters long, and will be built up to 1.70 meters higher. This measure is part of ongoing efforts to improve transport connections in the region and respond to the increased transport needs in recent years.
These developments come within a context in which public spending on the construction of roads, bridges and tunnels in Germany was 40.2% higher in 2020 than in 2011. Spending on road construction alone amounted to 14.2 billion euros. This also has an impact on the condition of the existing infrastructure, with 12.9% of the bridges being in good condition, while 9.9% have serious defects, according to [destatis.de] reports.
Cultural highlights in the region
But it's not just construction projects that keep the region busy. In Bad Soden, the “water games” will take place in the arena until Wednesday, July 16th, and always start at 7 p.m. The musical part of the evening is provided by the band “Mutters Beste”, which presents handmade rock and pop music. There is also a special film evening in the neighboring town of Gründau today at 6 p.m.: As part of the “Cinema for All” a historical football film about Lieblos, made in 1952, will be shown. The film screening is organized by the Gründau History Association in collaboration with various local institutions.
Cultural life is flourishing while infrastructure is evolving. While Hanau is getting a new main station bridge, the region is also keeping pace in other areas.
