New construction of the main station bridge in Hanau: closure from today!
A big step for the transport infrastructure in Hanau: The construction of the new main train station bridge is entering the next phase. From today, July 10, 2025, Auheimer Straße between Westerburgstrasse and the construction site will be partially closed. This measure is expected to continue until the end of 2025, while the project itself comprises a total duration until 2027. The traffic from Großauheim towards Hafenplatz and Steinheim will in future be diverted via Rodgaustraße and Kinzigheimer Weg, while the connection from Hafenplatz will continue to be possible via Westerburgstrasse and Auheimer Straße as a one -way street. Here the construction project has already led to some changes that will affect daily traffic.
The old bridge, which had a length of 120 meters and a weight of 4,500 tons and was built in 1958, was demolished at the beginning of the year because renovation was no longer possible. As the city of Hanau reports, the demolition was more complicated than the new building itself, since detailed preparation was necessary. Noise development during demolition work is to be expected, which is why access to the locked area is prohibited for security reasons.
The largest infrastructure project for decades
With a total budget of 56 million euros, the construction of the new main train station bridge has been the largest construction project in Hanau in decades. About half of the total costs are borne by Deutsche Bahn, while the state of Hesse provides around 18 million euros. The new bridge will consist of two parts that are 40 and 52 meters long and are built up to 1.70 meters higher. This measure is part of the ongoing efforts to improve transport connections in the region and to react to the increased traffic needs of recent years. These developments fall into a context in which public expenditure for the construction of roads, bridges and tunnels in Germany in 2020 was 40.2 % higher than in 2011. The expenditure on road construction alone was 14.2 billion euros. This also has an impact on the condition of the existing infrastructures, with 12.9 % of the bridges in good condition, while 9.9 % have serious defects, according to [Destatis.de].
cultural highlights in the region
Not only construction projects keep the region busy. In Bad Soden, the “water games” will take place in the arena until Wednesday, July 16, which always start from 7 p.m. The musical part of the evening is designed by the band "Mother's Best", the handmade rock and pop music. There is also a special film evening in the neighboring town of Gründau today at 6 p.m.: As part of the “Kino for everyone”, a historical football film about Liebeless, which was made in 1952, is shown. The film screening is organized by the History Association Gründau in cooperation with various local institutions.
cultural life blooms while the infrastructure is developing. While Hanau is getting a new main train station bridge, the region also keeps up in other areas.
