Together against anti-Semitism: Bad Homburg is setting an example!
The recent incident in Bad Homburg has caused a stir and is calling for a clear message against anti-Semitism. After a physical attack on the rabbi of the Jewish community in the city, several heads of the Hochtaunus district and the mayors of the 13 municipalities issued a joint statement. This statement not only condemns the attack as cowardly and inhumane, but also sees it as an attack on the values of the entire community. This reported the FAZ.
On August 4th, the rabbi was attacked by an unknown person in a shopping market on Basler Strasse. He shouted the phrase “Free Palestine” and knocked the phone out of the rabbi’s hand when he tried to take a picture of the attacker. The criminal police immediately started investigating to get to the bottom of the incident.
A strong sign for the community
In order to process the incident and show solidarity, local politicians are planning to gather on the Bad Homburg market square late on Thursday afternoon. With kippahs on their heads and a banner in their hand, they want to march through the city center towards the town hall. Mayor Alexander Hetjes (CDU) said that the rabbi's descriptions of daily attacks on him and his community were the last straw. He emphasized that anti-Semitism in Germany cannot be justified by the Middle East conflict and that every Jew deserves security and respect.
The statement is based on what happened and calls on the citizens of the Hochtaunus district to take a clear position against injustice. The goal is for the county and cities to remain places where everyone feels safe and welcome. In times when social tensions are increasing, such a strong signal is more important than ever.
Despite resistance, continue to advocate for tolerance
It is important to emphasize that such actions do not only benefit the Jewish community. They strengthen commitment against all forms of discrimination and promote an atmosphere of respect and togetherness. The solidarity that is now being shown could help Bad Homburg become a role model for other cities where anti-Semitism and other forms of hate still exist. How other topics that address social challenges, these incidents also reflect a deeper need for acceptance and mutual understanding.
Finally, it remains to be said that every individual in society has a responsibility. It is such joint declarations and peaceful gatherings that can help ensure that all people, regardless of origin, religion or culture, can live in a respectful and open environment. The attack on the rabbi should not only be seen as an isolated incident, but should also be interpreted as a call for vigilance against anti-Semitism.
