In Wiesbaden, early on Saturday morning, October 14th, there was an unpleasant incident that heated up tempers. A 69-year-old woman was walking her dog on Schlichterstrasse around 3:05 a.m. when an unknown man approached her from behind. Suddenly he lowered his pants completely and performed sexual acts on himself. This heinous act did not leave the woman unimpressed. She sprayed her animal repellent spray in the direction of the perpetrator, which apparently scared him off. The man then fled towards the city center of Wiesbaden.
The perpetrator was described by the injured party as southern. He is said to have been around 35 years old, 170 to 180 cm tall and had dark, short hair and a dark full beard. He was wearing a striped T-shirt and shorts. The Wiesbaden criminal police have already started the investigation and are asking witnesses to call (0611) 345-0, especially anyone who made suspicious observations at the time in question.
Growing concerns about public safety
The incident highlights a recurring theme: safety in public spaces. The number of crimes is increasing throughout Germany, especially in recent years. According to current police crime statistics, robbery crimes increased by 26.8 percent in 2022. To make matters worse, rapes and sexual assaults have also increased by 20.1 percent. A worrying development that even Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) cannot ignore. She attributes the increase in part to the lifting of coronavirus restrictions, which are giving perpetrators more opportunities to commit their crimes.
The police and the union are talking about an emerging “knife culture” in the cities, which is only increasing the fear and insecurity among the population. With over 144,000 cases of dangerous and serious bodily harm last year, many people feel their safety is threatened. And while the Wiesbaden criminal police are now actively looking for the exhibitionist, it remains to be hoped that such incidents will become less common in the future.
