Telekom is slowing down fiber optic expansion in Taunusstein: UGG is withdrawing!
Something is happening again in the area of fiber optic expansion in Taunusstein - and it is not necessarily positive. The city recently suffered another setback when “Our Green Fiber Optic” (UGG) terminated its cooperation agreement. The reason for this is Telekom's aggressive customer acquisition strategy, which is planning its own network expansion in one of five untouched districts, specifically in Wehen. This is reported by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
The planned expansion of UGG covered the districts of Neuhof, Wingsbach, Seitzenhahn and Watzhahn, but the uncertainty about what would happen with Telekom led UGG to put its plans on hold. Telekom has left inquiries about the situation in the affected districts unanswered, which further complicates matters. Despite the termination, UGG will continue to monitor the competitive situation in Taunusstein, even if this development is not positive.
State funding programs for fiber optic expansion
However, there is a ray of hope on the horizon for the citizens of Taunusstein. The city plans to seek state-funded programs for fiber optic expansion. As part of Gigabit funding 2.0, local authorities should be able to submit applications in order to create expansion opportunities in regions that are not economical for private providers. This provides information about this Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.
The federal government has set nationwide fiber optic expansion as an important goal by 2030, supported by a comprehensive acceleration law. This law is intended to reduce delays in permitting processes and connect unserved areas more quickly. The expansion of fiber optic and mobile networks enjoys “overwhelming public interest”, which is intended to accelerate innovations. Almost 99 percent of households in Germany now have access to broadband connections - impressive progress, as it is Federal Government highlights.
Experiences from the past
It is not the first time that Taunusstein has faced problems with fiber optic expansion. Two years ago there was already dissatisfaction with Telekom's "cherry picking", which led to GVG Glasfaser scrapping the project despite already having 4,000 contracts. GVG had originally promised to connect the districts without public subsidies - a plan that ultimately turned out to be unfeasible.
These experiences clearly show that there is a real interest in the region for a comprehensive, high-performance fiber optic network, which is not least fueled by the current situation. While residents in Wehen can still sign a contract with Telekom for a fiber optic connection, residents in other parts of the city have to fight for their connection.
The developments surrounding the fiber optic expansion in Taunusstein are further evidence of how important fast internet connections are for citizens' quality of life. Let's stay tuned to see what steps the city will take in the coming months to set the course for a future-proof connection.
