Queer hostility in the Main-Taunus: Alarming situation for Hofheimer CSD!
Last weekend there was a demonstration for diversity and against anti-queer sentiment during Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Hofheim. Hundreds of people gathered to support the rights of the queer community. “Stronger Together – especially now!” was the motto of the event, which took place in the city for the second time. The atmosphere was mostly peaceful, despite minor incidents such as a banner being cut.
However, the mood in the queer community in the Main-Taunus district is tense. Sven Rühl from the club Colorful reports increasing uncertainty. Political support for queer issues is decreasing and pressure from the right is growing. Queer rights are increasingly being questioned.
Action days and advice offers
In light of these challenges, Colorful is organizing a day of action against bullying on November 21st in Hofheim. Around 150 students will take part in a reading and interactive lecture. In the evening there will be a charity event with music, a poetry slam and discussions. The current situation means that the need for queer specialist advice, such as that offered by the association, is increasing.
The district office's blocking attitude is particularly critical when it comes to setting up a queer advisory service. Although funds for such advisory services are set aside in the budget, there is no viable solution for implementation. Rühl criticizes the fact that the necessary documents are not signed and that there is no real support for the queer community.
Growing threats to the queer community
The events in Hofheim are part of a larger picture that is emerging nationwide. While in cities like Regensburg and Wernigerode CSDs were canceled or jeopardized due to threats, in Hofheim they were held peacefully. Nevertheless, the threat to queer people in Germany must be taken seriously. Cases of attacks on queer people, especially young people, are increasing and also leave psychological marks such as stress and fear.
The local initiative Colorful is not only involved in political advocacy, but also in school workshops and anonymous self-help advice. Support and networking can play a crucial role in counteracting the rise of queer hostility.
Outlook for future CSDs
Further events are already planned for next year, and the CSD 2026 in Hofheim is supported by the city administration and mayor. The aim is to work more closely with local associations and faith communities to further increase the visibility of the queer community and promote cultural contributions.
In view of current developments, it is even more important to strengthen queer-friendly advice centers. Cities like Kiel have already established a variety of offerings that can serve as role models to support queer people in their identity and build a network of solidarity. A society that takes anti-queer tendencies seriously is one that is on the path to greater equality and safety for everyone.
The situation in the Main-Taunus district shows that the fight for equality and rights for the LGBTQ+ community is not over in Hesse either. The coming months will show how the population and their institutions respond to the challenges.
