Traffic chaos in Groß-Gerau: European speed skating championship begins!
The weekend is all about speed skating in Groß-Gerau! From July 5th to 13th, 2025, the city will host the European Championships, which will be organized by the Blau-Gelb Groß-Gerau club. This is the first time that the European Speedskating Championships are taking place in this form in Groß-Gerau, and the anticipation is palpable.
The highlight of the event is the speed skating marathon on July 13th. The first starting shot for the juniors and seniors is at 10 a.m., followed by further races for masters and amateurs. The evening event is expected to conclude at 5 p.m. There is a lot to see for sports-loving spectators, as the circuit, which is around 3.9 kilometers long, leads through the central streets of the city: Sudetenstrasse, Fabrikstrasse, Nauheimer Weg, Walther-Rathenau-Strasse, Luisenstrasse, Friedrichstrasse and Klein-Gerauer-Strasse.
Extensive traffic closures
However, the big event also comes with some restrictions. Extensive traffic closures will be required in the city center on Monday, July 13th. These start at 6 a.m. and affect all roads on the racetrack as well as the feeder roads. Access to the city center is restricted until 8:30 a.m. After this time, only Frankfurter Straße over the railway bridge towards Europakreisel remains open as an access route.
Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau expresses his pride in hosting the European Championships and asks citizens to understand the traffic adjustments during the week. “We are looking forward to lots of spectators and exciting competitions,” said Rüddenklau. Special preparations have been made to make attending the event as attractive as possible. Parking options are available at Fasanerie, Europaring and in the Henry-Dunant-Straße car park, among others.
Helpers wanted!
There's a lot to do at such a big event - and that's where community comes into play! Volunteers are still being sought for the period from July 1st to 14th who would like to support the Blue-Yellow team. Anyone interested can contact the organizers directly by email to make their contribution. The minimum age for helpers is 16 years, and overnight accommodation is offered in the sports hall opposite the skate park. Food is also provided, so you can actively participate in the events and at the same time gain an exciting insight behind the scenes.
The events promise to be a celebration for all speed skating fans and the city of Groß-Gerau is preparing for a sporting highlight. Those interested can find more information about the exact schedule of the competitions on the official website Speed skater GG.
The entire event is accompanied by a positive atmosphere in which sportsmanship and community are highly valued. Not only exciting competitions can be expected, but also real togetherness between those involved. So mark July 13th on your calendar – it will be a day not to be missed!
