Opel starts construction of the sustainable company headquarters in Rüsselsheim!

Yesterday was the big event in Rüsselsheim: the groundbreaking ceremony for Opel's new headquarters was celebrated, marking the starting signal for an ambitious project. This modern headquarters will not only house the administration building for Opel, but will also accommodate the colleagues from Stellantis Germany. Planned on a spacious area of 100,000 square meters, the building will provide space for research, development and prototype design. The renovation and redesign of the space is scheduled for the next 24 months, with the first move of employees scheduled to take place at the turn of the year 2026/27.

The new building will be built on the historic Opel factory site, near Mainzer Straße and the B43, and an administration building of around 28,000 square meters as well as a development center of around 30,000 square meters will be built. There will also be a parking garage and various green spaces that are not only pleasing to the eye, but should also contribute to CO2 neutrality. Opel wants to create a modern, sustainable working environment that is characterized by natural building materials and a good interior atmosphere.

Sustainability in focus

A central goal of the project is to create a CO2-neutral company headquarters. Those responsible are aiming for gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), which stands for high energy efficiency and the use of environmentally friendly materials. Geothermal energy and a photovoltaic system on a green roof will be used to provide energy. Opel CEO Florian Huettl emphasized that this project is more than just a modern building - it is about the future and the prospects for future generations.

The excavators and construction vehicles are already ready to tackle the orders in the coming months. VGP, which took over most of the no longer needed space in 2023, speaks of this new building as the largest brownfield project in the company's history. Mayor Patrick Burghardt also sees the new location as a great opportunity for Rüsselsheim to promote the economic future and create jobs.

A vision for the region

The entire “grEEn Campus” pursues not only local but also European goals; comparable projects are already being planned in Poissy (France) and Mirafiori (Italy). The campus project in Rüsselsheim is intended to be an open, glass and communicative building, with shady balconies and a green outdoor area that promotes CO2 neutrality in the area.

This construction project, which is intended to pave the way for the company's future, will not only improve Opel's infrastructure, but also contribute to strengthening the entire region. It remains to be seen how the project will develop and what positive effects it will have on the city's economic situation.
