Mörfelden-Walldorf: Discover the natural paradise of Mönchbruch!

A lot is currently happening in the idyllic town of Mörfelden-Walldorf, which is conveniently located between Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt and Wiesbaden. The location south of Frankfurt Airport makes this city a sought-after location for commuters and nature lovers alike. Here, just a few kilometers from the vibrant cities, people find peace and quiet in the countryside.

An important feature of Mörfelden-Walldorf is the distance between the two districts of Walldorf and Mörfelden. This is approximately 3.8 kilometers long and is crossed by an undeveloped open space that is ideal for walks and outdoor recreation. The public transport connections couldn't be better: the local train station offers both train and S-Bahn connections, and the A5 and A3 motorways can be easily reached in just a few minutes. This makes the city attractive not only for locals, but also for people who work in the metropolitan region.

Mönchbruch nature reserve

A real highlight of the region is the Mönchbruch nature reserve, which is located in the west of the city. With its 937 hectares, it is the second largest nature reserve in Hesse, right after Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue. This area impresses with its diverse landscape with old oak trees, meadows, swamp and alder forest as well as numerous moats that were created due to the high groundwater table. The area was originally located in the Main River bed, which today results in exceptional ecological diversity. Special bird species such as the black woodpecker, the gray heron and even the wryneck find a protected habitat here.

A popular starting point for visits to Mönchbruch is the hunting lodge or the Mönchbruch mill, where there are plenty of parking spaces available. There are almost always nature lovers here who visit the Mönchbruch pond - a popular breeding place for greylag geese, Egyptian geese and Canada geese. Anyone who loves nature and enjoys watching animals will be happy about the 4.10 meter high covered viewing platform. From here you have a fantastic view of the meadows and can peacefully observe fallow deer, red-backed shrikes and even various birds of prey.

An ecological paradise

Overall, the nature reserve offers habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. Around 540 plant species can be found in the NSG, 60 of which are threatened with extinction. This also includes the numerous species of bats, such as the Bechstein's bat, which are native to the Mönchbruch forests. Amphibians and reptiles also feel at home here: the native species include the grass snake, moor frog, tree frog and jumping frog. The NSG is not only a refuge for rare bird species, but is also a habitat for many mammals and other animal species.

Mörfelden-Walldorf shows once again that it is not just a place to live, but also a place where nature and modern amenities are harmoniously combined. Anyone who lives or visits here can enjoy the advantages of a quiet environment that also boasts its proximity to the big city. It remains to be seen what developments the future holds for this beautiful region.
