Mask shops: Spahn under criticism - billions and chaos!

five years ago, in the middle of Corona pandemic, the procurement of protective masks kept the entire nation in suspense. Jens Spahn, then Federal Minister of Health, is now the focus of the discussion about the catastrophic procurement measures. This is reported by the Wiesbadener Kurier . He admits that the situation at that time had to be traded quickly without having a blueprint or a risk assessment. "In need, the motto was to procure masks, regardless of the costs," said Spahn.

The circumstances under which the masks were procured were anything but optimal. Many people made their own masks, and it was even recommended to prepare used masks in the oven. The pressure on politics and health system was enormous when it came to delivery bottlenecks and masks, ventilation devices and disinfectants became scarce. Spahn is astonishing how quickly the dramatic situation has been forgotten.

internal report causes excitement

Tagesschau there were also resistances against Fiege, which was selected as a central procurement and distributor of masks and protective clothing.

The Ministry of Health directly turned to the Ministry of the Interior to enforce this decision. Spahn justified himself that the emergency required this. However, Fiege turned out to be overwhelmed with the large amount of masks, which further reinforced the problems. Over 100 retailers are now complaining to the federal government, and many are increasingly receiving right. The federal government could have lost over 2.3 billion euros through these mask transactions.

overs procurement and administrative costs

according to the Federal Audit Office at the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 5.7 billion masks were procured at a price of 5.9 billion euros. However, the actual need was much lower and over two thirds of these masks were never used. To date, 800 million masks are in stock, for which there is no usage and distribution concept. More than 1.2 billion of masks had to be destroyed because they had exceeded their expiry date.

The follow -up costs incurred by storage, logistics and administration add up to 460 million euros by the end of 2023. For 2024, the Ministry expects further, significant expenses. All of this leads to the big question: How can politics learn from these mistakes in order to be better positioned in future crises?

The processing of this chaotic phase is far from complete. Spahn and the Ministry of Health are in the spotlight, while the public discussion on the costs incurred and the quality of the decisions continues.
