Storm alarm: Fire brigade fights against heavy rain in the Darmstadt district

Weather chaos shook the Darmstadt-Dieburg district on Monday, August 7th. Heavy rain began around 4 p.m. and hit particularly hard the western parts of the district, such as Griesheim, Weiterstadt and Messel. The fire department had its hands full trying to get the water under control. A total of 25 missions were carried out from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., mainly due to full basements. In Griesheim in particular, the emergency services reported large-scale water intrusion in a commercial property, where the suspended false ceiling was affected, and in Weiterstadt a stream became a problem that overflowed its banks and entered a neighboring building. Rhein Main Verlag reports on fire departments from various communities such as Babenhausen, Dieburg and Roßdorf that were in action.

The rain didn't come alone! On Tuesday, August 8th, the community of Mühltal experienced a widespread power outage that paralyzed the districts around 7:10 a.m. The fire department was alerted to occupy the equipment sheds and accept requests for help. Fortunately, the digital radio network was working and the disruptions caused by the power outage were resolved by 8 a.m. The exact cause of the failure is currently unknown.

A look at the neighbors

However, what happened in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district did not go without an echo. The fire brigades were also busy with a number of operations in the Main-Kinzig district. Over 200 weather-related operations were reported, with around 130 of these operations taking place in the eastern part of the district alone, particularly in Babenhausen and Dieburg. [Hessenschau]. In Darmstadt, the emergency services struggled with full cellars and fallen trees, which significantly disrupted traffic. Fortunately, there were no injuries during all the storm operations.

The firefighters worked at full speed to get the situation under control. In Gelnhausen, Bad Orb and Schlüchtern, firefighters were also called upon to repair the damage and support the citizens. In the meantime, the challenges had become apparent in Schermbeck, where the fire brigade had to cope with a real marathon of operations from 9:30 p.m. Here too, heavy rain led to massive water damage in many cellars. Schermbeck-Online reports around 20 operations in a single night, with the emergency services being strengthened thanks to the support of the Drevenack fire-fighting unit.

Overall, it is clear that storms can challenge many people and communities in a very short space of time. The preparedness of the fire brigade and the support of the neighborhood are essential in times like these. Because when it comes down to it, they stand tirelessly at the front and fight against nature.
