Northern Hesse in focus: The smallest communities in Hesse revealed!
The demographic landscape of Hesse is full of surprises, as the ten smallest municipalities in the state are found almost exclusively in northern Hesse. A recent study shows that this is not just a timid trend, but also has a noticeable economic and cultural impact. The 2022 census has now impressively documented this after finally updating the official population figures.
As the Frankfurter Neue Presse reports, the community of Weißenborn takes first place among the smallest communities with just 963 residents. It is made up of the districts of Weißenborn and Rambach and is known in the region for its historical significance as the “DörnerMEN”. This is followed by Schwarzenborn in the Schwalm-Eder district, with 1,086 inhabitants. The town in question has a long history that dates back to 1332 and is also an important location for the Bundeswehr.

Background information and the 2022 census
The data for the 2022 census was officially recorded on May 15, 2022, and the revised population of Hesse is 2.6 percent lower than previously assumed, a finding that has an impact on many municipalities. The Hessian statistics show that almost every tenth municipality in Hesse has lodged a complaint with the State Statistical Office in order to check the new figures. This procedure is part of a register-based census, which is supplemented by sample surveys and is derived from legal requirements of the Federal Constitutional Court.
According to the publications of Federal Statistical Office the population figures are updated regularly. This is intended to ensure that the population register and the people actually residing match, as in the past there were numerous over- and under-recordings. The aim is to ensure a realistic representation of the population situation and therefore constantly monitors births, deaths and registrations and de-registrations.
The small communities in Hesse are not just places on the edge of the field of vision - they are the heart of the region that needs to be protected and promoted. In times when society is constantly changing, monitoring these demographic figures remains of great importance for municipal development and the creation of sustainable structures.
