Defeat for Alsfeld Chess Club: Hopes shattered against Kassel!

The chess players of the 1st team of the Alsfeld Chess Club suffered a bitter defeat on Sunday, October 29, 2025. In the North Regional League the team lost to Caissa Kassel 2 with 2.5:5.5. After a promising start to the season, the Alsfeld team had hoped for more. The disappointment with the result weighed heavily.

Particularly striking was the role of Dr. Jens Schweisgut on board 7, who lost a central pawn early and then had to give up quickly. Bernd Miemelt was able to bring about a positive turnaround when he equalized with a courageous sacrifice attack on the opposing king. This temporarily gave the people of Alsfeld new hope.

Nerve-wracking fights

Frank Solf on board 3 agreed to a draw, while Tobias Stein won his game on board 2. These victories fueled notions of a better outcome. But the joy didn't last long: Lothar Zilch on board 4 got into trouble when his opponent opened the position and he lost his bishop due to a knight fork. Marco Stein on board 1 had to give up in a difficult endgame after his opponent found a decisive move in a time crunch.

In addition, the further defeats of Helmut Wiegand and Nils Kneußel also contributed to Alsfeld's unsuccessful day. Wiegand not only had to struggle with a time problem, but also failed to make a necessary move on move 40. Kneußel rejected a draw bid and ultimately lost after his plan to decisively influence the game failed.

A look at upcoming rounds

New challenges await Alsfelder in the coming games. The 2025/2026 chess year brings more exciting matches in the league in which the team is keen to show that it has what it takes to do better. The state of the league shows that teams like SC Erlangen 2 and SK Kelheim 1 in particular are delivering strong performances. The competition remains exciting and the people of Alsfeld are called upon to rehabilitate themselves.

In the next round on December 10, 2025, SK Schwandorf 1 will face SC Erlangen 2, while SK Klingenberg 1 will face the challenge of SK Herzogenaurach 1. AQ winner SC Bamberg 1 is also in top form and will play against TSV Kareth-Lappersdorf 1. The large number of encounters shows that anything is always possible in chess.

The chess community remains optimistic that the Alsfeld team will learn from their experiences and will soon achieve tangible successes again. After all, every loss is also an opportunity to improve and learn.
