Hersfeld-Rotenburg celebrates 67 student volunteers – commitment is worth it!
In the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, the voluntary work of young people is bringing a breath of fresh air. In a festive ceremony, 67 students were recently honored for their commitment to the Voluntary Social School Year in Hesse (FSSJH). The Coordination Center for Citizen Engagement reports that the recognition took place in the Audimax at Obersberg and was followed with excitement by around 200 guests.
The young people, who were involved in various placements from sports clubs to animal shelters, put in at least 80 hours. Their valuable work has not only promoted their personal development, but also brought new ideas and impulses to the organizations. In his speech, first district councilor Dirk Noll emphasized the importance of volunteering as a crucial factor for personal development.
Focus on volunteer work
A large number of locations – 28 in total – benefited from the creative input of the young people. Whether in hospitals, nursing homes or cultural institutions, the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) offers young people under the age of 27 who have completed compulsory full-time schooling the opportunity to become active in social areas. At the ceremony, the committed students not only received their certificates, but the placements that make a significant contribution to supporting the next generation were also recognized.
The FSJ is legally regulated in Germany by the Youth Voluntary Services Act (FSJ Act) and has established itself as an integral part of voluntary work. The volunteers are insured in statutory health, nursing care and pension insurance, which ensures their safety during their service. They are also entitled to professional guidance and educational support.
Registration and new opportunities
The next registrations for the voluntary social school year 2025/2026 are already open, with an official start on October 1st. Interested students aged 14 and over can contact the Coordination Center for Civic Engagement online or directly. A wide range of opportunities are offered here to develop a good knack for social projects. The much-cited area of volunteering not only offers a platform for engagement, but also contributes to strengthening cohesion in society.
Volunteering in Germany encompasses a variety of activities - from work in sports clubs to the volunteer fire department to church commitments - it shows that society depends on the commitment of its members. According to Statista, almost 86,000 sports clubs are active, and over a million people in Germany are involved in the fire service. In this way, each volunteer makes an invaluable contribution that strengthens the foundations of a functioning community.
It will be exciting to see how many young people decide to join the FSJ in the future and what ideas they will bring with them. One thing is certain: the evening in the Audimax was not only an honor, but also an invitation to many to get involved and become an active part of social life.
