Wald fire risk: fire brigades in Waldeck-Frankenberg well prepared!

Currently not only the sun burns from the sky, the topic of forest fire protection has also taken large areas in our region. The first district deputy Karl-Friedrich Frese recently found that there is currently no acute risk of forest fire in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, but preparations for possible scenarios have already started. According to HNA, the fire brigades and communities are well equipped. A lot has been done in recent years to be prepared for future challenges.

A seminar on forest and surface fire fighting in cooperation with the district fire brigade association was organized in 2022. In this context, the cities and municipalities were equipped with special forest fire fighting sets that include essential equipment such as distributors, D-hoses and jet pipes.

professional training and new vehicles

However, the preparations go beyond material resources. In 2023, the STLF 20-V relay fire engine and a TLF 4000-V tank fire engine were also included in the fire protection funding directive. These vehicles are specially designed for combating vegetation fires and receive separate financial support.

In the district, relay drivers are currently in the procurement for Volkmarsen and Allendorf/Somlar, while the Bergheim/Giflitz fire department already has a modern device car logistics with a module for forest fire fighting. The fact that the Hessian State Fire Brigade School in Kassel offers special training seminars on forest fire fighting is an additional plus. 64 firefighters from Waldeck-Frankenberg have registered for this.

statistical insights into the operations

Statistically speaking, the region has recorded an average of 41 missions of vegetation and surface fires per year over the past 20 years. The highest value was 110 missions in 2018, while in 2021 the lowest value was achieved with only 20 missions. The AG "Forest Fire Control Hessen", which was founded in 2022, also contributes to developing recommendations for fire departments that target security clothing, deployment technology and tactics.

The influence of climate change

Not only in Waldeck-Frankenberg, the topic of forest fire protection enjoys the highest priority. Climate change is a growing challenge for fire brigades across Germany, as reported by the DGUV. The number of forest fires has often exceeded the mark of 1,000 fires in recent years, and in 2023 the burned forest area in Germany was over 40 % higher than the long -term average since 1991.

In addition, the number of extreme weather events, especially heat waves and vegetation fires, is constantly increasing. This not only leads to increased risks for the emergency services, but also to health concerns. A study has shown that several carcinogenic substances are released in vegetation fires, which underlines the importance of correct personal protective equipment. In combating vegetation fires, lighter protective clothing is recommended to minimize exposure to stressful substances.

In view of these challenges, it remains important that the fire brigades continue to train and the innovative approaches of fire protection are accepted. The WKR initiative also begins to become a crucial element to promote cooperation between various participants in the field of fire protection. The demostration areas adopted in the initiative offer the possibility of practically illustrating fire protection measures and discussing conflicts directly on the object.

Overall, it can be seen that the fire brigades in our region are well positioned in order to counter the future challenges of forest fire protection. A healthy sense of duty and the right tools are the key to calmly oppose possible future challenges.
