Triathlon highlight in Wetterburg: 500 participants at the Twistesee event!

What a sporting spectacle at Twistesee! The 41st Twistesee Triathlon took place in Wetterburg on September 16, 2025 and managed to attract a fully booked starting field of 500 participants. So many athletes had never registered for this event before, and the organization of around 130 helpers made the event a real success, as wlz-online.de reports.

The triathlon, which was originally launched in 1983, has developed over the years into an important highlight in the region's sports calendar. It will even take place for the 40th time in 2024. In recent years, the event has been professionally organized, which makes it possible to ensure that the competition runs smoothly, even in the face of challenges such as a construction site at the Twisteseehalle. Incidentally, this construction site had no influence on the transition zones or the goal of the competition, as hna.de states.

A look at the disciplines

This triathlon offers something for many performance classes: from the short distance with 500 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers of cycling and 5 kilometers of running to the Olympic distance, which includes 1500 meters of swimming, 40 kilometers of cycling and 10 kilometers of running. This year 91 athletes were registered for the Olympic distance – 25 more than last year! With 201 registered starters, the short course had an increase of over 60 athletes compared to 2023.

A special highlight was the relay competition, in which 22 teams of three took part. An exciting race, as many league teams were on the road to collect valuable points for promotion and relegation. The first swimming starts took place at 9:30 a.m. for the people's distance, followed by further groups every ten minutes. The award ceremonies were scheduled for 12:35 p.m. and you could feel the excitement and anticipation of the participants.

Nostalgia and development of triathlon

As is well known, the history of triathlon in Germany began in 1982 with the first competition at Lake Baldeney in Essen. Since then, the sport has become one of the most popular leisure activities. The increasing number of participants in the Twistesee triathlon reflects this trend. The origins of triathlon show how big events can grow from small beginnings. This was also the case with the Twistesee triathlon, which has been organized by the triathlon department of VfL Bad Arolsen since 2008 after the city of Bad Arolsen gave up the organization in 2008.

Overall, it shows that the Twistesee Triathlon is not only an important part of the local community, but also an important building block in the history of triathlon in Germany. The 40th anniversary of the event will be celebrated in 2024, and the fully booked starting field for 2025 shows that the enthusiasm for this sport is unbroken. So it remains exciting to see what the future holds for the Twistesee Triathlon!
