S-Bahn chaos in Frankfurt: complete closure ended, new timetables start!

The S-Bahn in Frankfurt has finally started operating again after an intensive eleven-day closure. As FFH reports, the S3 and S4 lines can run again between Kronberg and Bad Soden and Frankfurt Süd as of today, November 19, 2025. The S5 is also on the mend and now runs every 30 minutes between Frankfurt-Rödelheim and Frankfurt Süd.

The reason for the closure was extensive construction work carried out by Deutsche Bahn to repair and modernize the infrastructure. Among other things, six switches in Rödelheim station were replaced and work was carried out on the signaling technology and the overhead line.

Construction work in the northern S-Bahn network

These measures are part of a larger project to modernize the rail network in the Taunus, which, according to Deutsche Bahn has been running since the end of October. The construction work not only affects the S-Bahn lines S3, S4 and S5, but also the regional trains RB15 and RB16. The planned work is expected to last until December 3rd.

A replacement bus service was set up for the duration of the construction work, with bus lines such as S5E, S15X and S16X running between Frankfurt-Rödelheim and the Köppern or Friedberg area. These medida are intended to ensure that passengers can still reach their destination despite the restrictions.

What's in the future?

However, after the resumption of regular S-Bahn operations, not everything is idle. There will be another closure on April 19, 2026 to check the newly laid switches. Here too, the railway is again planning a replacement service with buses in order to keep transfer and travel times for commuters as short as possible.

From December 3, 2025, the S5 will probably again serve the entire route over the northern section from Rödelheim and will therefore again serve all stops, such as Weißkirchen/Steinbach, Stierstadt, Oberursel, Bad Homburg, Seulberg up to Friedrichsdorf.

BUsers can look forward to improved infrastructure and more stable operations, even if there have been some restrictions in recent weeks. With the new course and the modernized facilities, the course has been set for the future. Ultimately, the railway has shown a good knack for mastering the challenges of the construction work.
