Reduce emissions together: Companies focus on reducing CO2!

On June 15, 2025, the fifth meeting of the “fairnetzt” corporate network of klimafaireins took place in Groß-Eichen. Numerous representatives from 21 companies came together to improve their carbon footprints and learn from each other. The focus was on forward-looking topics such as the switch to e-mobility and the use of artificial intelligence.

The event was organized by Marlen and Mark Philippi, who not only have a long tradition in the travel and local transport sector, but also recently celebrated their 90th anniversary. Over 50 guests took the opportunity to gain exciting insights into current developments and exchange ideas about climate protection measures.

Focus on CO2 balances and e-mobility

A central concern of the meeting was the discussion about converting company fleets to e-buses and the necessary infrastructural requirements for this. Dr. Thorsten Reichel, first chairman of klimafairein, spoke about the challenges and opportunities of e-mobility as well as the association's activities. He encouraged those present to actively contribute to climate protection and to pursue innovative approaches.

The presentations in the form of the “Speed ​​Pitch” format, in which three companies presented their CO2 reduction measures, were particularly striking. The Gießen public utilities reported on an AI-controlled heating system that was able to save 27% of energy costs. Another participant, Sparkasse Oberhessen, is planning to become climate neutral by 2035, with a focus on improving buildings, e-charging infrastructure and digitalization. TNL Environmental Planning Hungen has already been able to reduce over 24% of CO2 emissions per employee through the use of renewable energies and home office.

• Für Elektroautos gilt: Ab 90.000 km CO2-neutraler als Benziner. Laut einer Untersuchung von VDI starten Elektroautos zwar mit einer schlechteren CO2-Bilanz in der Produktion, doch über die Nutzungsphase gleichen sie dies aus, insbesondere wenn die Energie aus erneuerbaren Quellen stammt.
• Im Vergleich zur herkömmlichen Fahrzeugen zeigen Elektroautos im Betrieb signifikante Einsparungen, was besonders bei einer Laufleistung von 200.000 Kilometern zur Geltung kommt.

Sustainability and future projects

Another topic of the event was the planning of new planting campaigns in autumn, whereby suitable areas and sponsors are being sought. Many participants had already taken part in the practical planting activities in spring, getting some fresh air and strengthening the sense of community. In addition, a concept for climate-fair vegetable gardens is being developed to promote sustainably produced food in the region.

The renovation work on the faireinsheim in Nieder-Ohmen is currently being planned in order to use the building sustainably. The invitation to the “Sustainability Business Breakfast”, which takes place every second Wednesday of the month, encourages active participation.

Implementing the climate goals is a challenge that the transport sector must also face. In Germany, emissions from transport are responsible for around 22% of total emissions - action is needed to achieve the climate targets by 2030.
