Elvis cult in Bad Nauheim: Fans celebrate in the city park with a vintage vibe!
Things are really going crazy in Bad Nauheim's city park. The sounds of drums and electric guitars blare from speakers as people gather in colorful petticoats and Hawaiian shirts. On a weekend like this there is hardly a place left in the park, because it is time again for the European Elvis Festival, which this year attracts a particularly large number of Elvis fans, according to the Bad Nauheim city marketing and tourism company. The festival is always celebrated around the anniversary of the death of the “King of Rock and Roll,” who died on August 16, 1977, and has become a fixed date in the calendars of many Elvis fans since its first edition in 2012.
The atmosphere in the park is exuberant and happy. Visitors dance, sing and chat comfortably over a cold beer in a pavilion. “Look, there’s a group from Berlin that really has the right mood!” shouts a festival visitor into the circle. In the immediate vicinity, people strut around in Elvis outfits, including a woman from Denmark who came especially for this event. They are all here to celebrate the legend Elvis Presley, who lived in Bad Nauheim from 1958 to 1960 during his military service.
A piece of history and nostalgia
A highlight of the festival is the statue of Elvis Presley in the park, which commemorates the time when the artist lived here. Exclusive appearances by Elvis' former partner Linda Thompson and former musician Per-Erik Hallin provide even more goosebumps. Hallin talks about personal experiences with Elvis and immerses the listener in the great era of rock'n'roll. Meanwhile, there are neighbors at Elvis' house selling fan merchandise - a true paradise for collectors and nostalgics.
Speaking of nostalgia: the festival area has been transformed into a colorful shopping area. Here you can find everything from vintage cars and flashy fashion to records and furniture with Elvis motifs. “This festival does really good business and attracts not only locals but also a lot of tourists,” explains a saleswoman as she sells a T-shirt with the King’s likeness.
The influence of Elvis on the music world
Elvis Aaron Presley, born January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, left an indelible mark on the music world. He shaped generations with histrionic hits like “Heartbreak Hotel” and unforgettable films like “Jailhouse Rock.” His music combined elements from various genres such as rock, pop and gospel and helped him sell an estimated 500 million records worldwide. Thanks to his numerous achievements, including three Grammy Awards and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018, he is one of the most important cultural icons of the 20th century.
But despite his fame, Elvis struggled with health problems in his later years, which also affected his creativity. Schilling, a former close companion, emphasizes that Elvis' artistic challenges diminished in the last years of his life, which reduced his expressiveness as an artist. This was partly the result of the corporate strategy of his manager Colonel Tom Parker, who influenced Presley's artistic decisions.
A bit contradictory is the fact that in 1975 Elvis spoke to Barbra Streisand about a possible film appearance in "A Star Is Born" - a role that was ultimately cast differently. According to Schilling, frustration over this missed opportunity played a role in Elvis' admittedly difficult decision-making in his final years.
In Bad Nauheim, the legendary musician is celebrated with a variety of events that appeal to the senses and the soul. A celebration that transports people to another time, full of music, dance and, above all, memories of a man who revolutionized the world of rock and roll. And so this year the European Elvis Festival in Bad Nauheim will once again make the hearts of many Elvis fans blossom and keep the memories of the unforgettable King of Rock and Roll alive.
