Offenbach district focuses on climate protection: New manager takes off!
The Offenbach district is tackling the issue of climate protection vigorously! He has been part of the Hessian alliance of climate municipalities since 2022 and thus clearly shows that climate protection is close to his heart. How [kreis-offenbach.de]. reports, a new position for climate protection management was recently created. Johannes Lotz took up his duties as climate protection manager in mid-May 2025 and is bringing a breath of fresh air to the team. The position is supported for two years by the National Climate Protection Initiative (NKI), financed by the Climate and Transformation Fund of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.
The goals are clearly defined: Changes in climate protection at the local level should be pursued strategically, bundling measures and initiating new projects. Lotz, previously climate adaptation manager in Rüsselsheim am Main, will also drive forward the update of the 2023 climate protection concept in order to initiate the next steps with fresh enthusiasm.
Accounting according to BISKO standard
One of Johannes Lotz's central tasks is to create a comprehensive greenhouse gas balance in accordance with the BISKO standard. This standard uses the final energy-based territorial principle and enables a fine mapping of the municipality's influence, as klimaschutz.de explains. Energy supply emissions are allocated to the different consumption sectors, including private households, commerce and industry.
Based on this balance, a potential analysis will be created that will help develop measures to reduce CO₂ emissions by 2040. It is particularly important to take district-owned properties, procurement and public and private transport into account. The accounting is based on a clear concept that, with the BISKO method, offers a solid basis for municipalities, as the Federal Environment Agency also emphasizes in its report. This methodology helps to increase the transparency of GHG balances and enables comparisons between different municipalities.
Project integration and municipal educational offerings
But that's not all! Fairtrade projects and municipal educational offerings on sustainability are also integrated into the climate protection management of the Offenbach district. These initiatives show that climate protection goes far beyond technical measures and should also reach society.
Johannes Lotz will be there on “Energy Transition Day” on June 21, 2025 at the district hall in Dietzenbach to exchange ideas with citizens and interested parties.
