Future of heat in Hanau: information event on the heat transition on June 17th

On June 17th, an exciting information event entitled “Changing local and district heating” will take place in the Stadthof Hanau. This is organized by the climate protection management of the city of Hanau in close cooperation with the vhs Hanau. From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., all interested citizens are invited to find out about current developments in heat supply. Matthias Fernitz, head of the heat department at Stadtwerke Hanau, will share his knowledge and report on the future role of district heating in Hanau.

The changes that citizens will face in the coming years are particularly important. What potential does district heating have for a climate-friendly future? Definitely an exciting question that will be examined during the event. Important topics such as the composition of the district heating price are also addressed. The event is aimed at home and apartment owners and landlords who are interested in a sustainable heat supply.

A contribution to climate neutrality

The city of Hanau has set itself high goals: it wants to become climate neutral by 2040 and is playing a pioneering role in municipal heat planning, which has been mandatory since the Hessian Energy Act was amended on November 29, 2022. This planning is a strategic process that is intended to advance the implementation of the heat and energy transition. The heat transition includes the decarbonization of the energy supply and the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. An important goal is also to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption through energy-efficient renovations in the building sector.

All of these aspects were also examined in a study by the Competence Center for Public Economy, Infrastructure and Public Services (KOWID) at the University of Leipzig. The study shows how important heating networks are for the transformation from fossil-dominated to climate-neutral heat supply systems by 2045. Although comprehensive heating networks are not yet widespread in Germany, they are considered central elements for implementing the heating transition, both in large cities and in smaller communities. On this path, municipalities and energy supply companies face major challenges.

Invitation to participate

The event on June 17th is part of the city's “Energy Transition at Home” series, which provides monthly information on various energy topics. Registration is required and can be done using an online form from the vhs Hanau or by email. You can find more information about this on the city of Hanau website.

The cooperation between the city and municipal utilities is an important step towards an environmentally friendly energy supply - especially in urban areas. In this context, district heating is seen by many as the green future of heating. However, some consumer advocates express concerns about dependence on energy suppliers and are committed to consumer-friendly solutions, which the Hanau municipal utilities would also like to shed light on.
