Concern in Gelnhausen: Massive bridge at the train station threatens garden plots!
A planned bridge at Gelnhausen train station is causing increased concern among residents. The new bridge, which is to be built in the Haitz-Höchst district, will be up to 20 meters high and have two lanes. According to Primavera24, Deutsche Bahn is presenting the variant that represents the “greatest possible” intervention in the local environment. The construction project under consideration includes the construction of a bridge over a four-track railway line and a road ramp up to 500 meters long, which will lead through the garden plots “On the community lands”.
This transformation has worrying consequences, with fears of expropriation of up to 60 garden plots being raised. A community of interest has formed and sent an open letter to the public to draw attention to people's concerns. The immediate residents are alarmed and are demanding more transparency from the railway.
Changes for pedestrians
Another development in the area is the announced opening of a pedestrian bridge, which will be opened for use on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, as hanau-fulda.deutschebahn.com reports. The new bridge will provide an important connection between the central platform and the south side of the station, while at the same time closing the northern section of the existing underpass. In order to support the changed routing, passengers are asked to pay close attention to notices and signs.
In addition, the southern section of the pedestrian underpass between the central platform and the south side will remain open until further notice. This diversion allows travelers to continue to easily reach the central platform from the south side (particularly from the Park & Ride parking lot). A barrier-free pedestrian underpass is also available, about 300 meters east of the train station on Altenhaßlauer Straße, which can be reached in around four minutes on foot.
A call for participation
In view of these significant renovation measures, Deutsche Bahn is striving to keep disruptions to the station's operations as low as possible. Nevertheless, no one can guarantee that there will be no disruptions during construction work. For more information see the website hanau-wuerzburg-fulda.de a reliable contact point. The planned changes to Gelnhausen train station are a further step in a major modernization project. Residents' concerns should not be overlooked during implementation and it is hoped that future discussions can lead to an amicable solution.
