Free e-cargo bike Lara Garden” now available in Gelnhausen!

In Gelnhausen, the “Lararossa” initiative of the People for Future Gelnhausen/Main-Kinzig has taken an innovative step towards environmentally friendly mobility. An e-cargo bike called “Lara Garden” is now available for free use. The cargo bike is located in a solar-powered bicycle garage on the Holzgasse parking deck and can be picked up around the clock. Access is via a booking code, which further increases user-friendliness. The offer has been available since April 2024 and has its origins in more than 300 hours of voluntary work by committed members of the initiative, such as gnz.de reported.

Cargo bikes, which are also very popular in other cities, are ideal means of transport for family trips and for the environmentally friendly transport of goods. Despite the high purchase costs and space requirements, surveys show that demand for cargo bikes is increasing. An example of a similar initiative can be found in Schöllkrippen, where families and interested parties can borrow the “Karla” cargo bike free of charge in a weatherproof garage. This garage, provided by a hardware store, is equipped with both charging power and spare parts and shows the great potential of municipal projects such as those being pursued in Gelnhausen. Financing comes from public funds as well as local sponsors, such as mkk-echo.de reported.

Sustainability and mobility

The topic of sustainability is more important than ever and is also supported by initiatives such as “I Relieve Cities”, where companies have been able to integrate cargo bikes into everyday life. The results are impressive: around 750 companies took part in the project and more than 307,000 kilometers were covered. Almost two thirds of those surveyed reported a reduction in driving with combustion engines and thus a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions of an average of 400 kilograms per year. This supports the relevance of cargo bikes not only in the private sector but also in the commercial sector, demonstrating the extensive environmental benefits of transport alternatives such as this DLR explained.

The region also hosts cultural events that strengthen the community. Today there is a city tour in Steinau with the goblin Picco for children. This little journey of discovery begins at 11 a.m. at the fairytale fountain on the market square “Am Kumpen” and is rounded off with an exciting fairytale from the “Magic Brush”. At the same time, the exhibition "Johann Philipp Thelott. Frankfurt engraver with Hanau connection" will open in Hanau at 6 p.m. in Philippsruhe Palace. This exhibition, which will be on view from July 10th to February 1st, 2026, highlights the work of the engraver Johann Philipp Thelott and his connections to Hanau.
