Bon'odori Summer Dance Festival: Japanese culture conquers Frankfurt!

On August 23rd, the old town of Frankfurt am Main blooms with bright colors and cheerful melodies when the Bon'odori Summer Dance Festival opens its doors. From 2:00 p.m. it's all happening on Liebfrauenberg Square, where the vibrations of Japanese tradition and culture will fill the air. A prelude that begins with an opening and congratulatory speech before the first dances begin at 2:20 p.m.

The festival is organized by the Japanese-German Bon-odori Tanzkreis e.V., which has grown steadily since it was founded in 2011. The roots of this dance movement can be traced back to the 150th anniversary of German-Japanese friendship. That year also saw tragedy when the devastating East Japan Earthquake struck on March 11, leading to strong community mobilization to help rebuild affected areas.

Diversity of dances and a common goal

Visitors can look forward to a dazzling selection of dances, including classics like thisFrankfurt ondoandTokyo ondo, with each dance telling its own story. Also traditional melodies likeKagoshima ohara bushiandTankō bushiare brought to life to convey the magic of Japanese culture. A special highlight is a group photo after the first round of dancing, which will be staged at 3:05 p.m., followed by another round of dancing starting at 3:35 p.m.

With the aim of further deepening the German-Japanese friendship, the dance group was formally established as a registered association in October 2012. This happened after numerous events and the grateful gathering with the Frankfurt community. The club appeared at the Frankfurt Carnival on February 10, 2013 to thank for the support from Germany.

Culture and community in harmony

The Bon’odori Summer Dance Festival is more than just an event – it is a celebration of community, cultures and lessons from the past. The joy of dancing brings people together and creates memories that last. The association, under the motto “Nichi-Doku Bon-Odori Kai”, wants to increase awareness of Japanese culture and at the same time actively contribute to supporting those affected by the earthquake disaster.
