Premiere of Shakespeare's As You Like It” at the State Theater!

On Saturday, June 21st, at 7:30 p.m., the time has finally come: the last drama premiere of the season at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden is just around the corner. The program includes William Shakespeare's classic “As You Like It,” directed by Nurkan Erpulat. The director, who was born in Ankara and studied in Berlin and Izmir, has already made a name for himself with sommelized works such as “Faked” and “Heimat im Kopf”. In this production he brings to the stage the themes of power cliques, role reversal and the turmoil of love, which are also very popular with today's audiences.

“As You Like It” was originally performed at London's Globe Theater in 1599 and is known for the catchy line: "All the world is a stage, and women like men but players." These words not only outline the genre of the piece, but also offer a deep insight into the questions of play and reality, love, gender relations and identity discovery that are addressed in the work. A particularly exciting element is the disguise of the protagonist Rosalinde, who poses as a man named Ganymede in order to test Orlando. In addition to the classical aspects, this modern reinterpretation also addresses contemporary gender issues, which gives the piece a fresh perspective.

Plot and characters

The plot follows Rosalinde and Orlando as they flee from Duke Frederick into the Forest of Arden. As they explore their identities and relationships there, they encounter two other estranged brothers, Olivier and Jaques, who have also been cast out. Duke Frederick, who has deposed his brother, leads a brutal reign and deprives the lords of their goods, but the forest becomes the scene of a new order and friendship. The characters include well-known faces such as Martin Plass as Duke Senior and Klara Wördemann in the role of Rosalinde.

  • Rosalinde: Klara Wördemann
  • Orlando: Lennart Preining
  • Herzog Frederick: Lasse Boje Haye Weber
  • Olivier: Abdul Aziz Al Khayat
  • Jaques: Adi Hrustemović
  • Celia: Sybille Weiser
  • Touchstone: Trang Dòng
  • Phoebe: Maria Wördemann
  • Corin: Martin Plass

The set design was by Gitti Scherer and the costumes were designed by Aleksandra Kica. The music by Michael Haves completes the experience. The positive experiences of exile symbolized by the Forest of Arden are intended to be highlighted in this production and convey a feeling of freedom and new beginnings.

Further dates

The premiere will not be the only opportunity to enjoy the piece. Additional dates are planned for June 27th and 28th and July 3rd, 2025. These performances not only offer the chance to immerse yourself in the world of Shakespeare, but also a look at the dynamics and challenges of passion, identity and social norms.

We'll be excited to see how Nurkan Erpulat's fresh perspective on this timeless classic is received.
