The time has come: DFB Cup draw live today at 5:15 p.m.!

Tonight the time has come: the draw for the first round of the DFB Cup is on the agenda. At 5:15 p.m. the excitement among the fans will rise when athlete Owen Ansah acts as the “raffle ticket” and DFB Vice President Peter Frymuth conducts the draw. The draw will be broadcast live on ZDF and in the liga3-online.de ticker. The nine third division teams that are taking part this year can look forward to the balls that decide the draw. These include the following teams:

  • SSV Ulm 1846
  • Jahn Regensburg
  • 1. FC Saarbrücken
  • Energie Cottbus
  • Hansa Rostock
  • Rot-Weiss Essen
  • Viktoria Köln
  • Wehen Wiesbaden
  • 1. FC Schweinfurt

This is a small decrease compared to last season: three fewer third division teams are trying their luck in the DFB Cup this year. A highlight for the amateurs is that the majority of them will compete against first division teams or the best 14 second division teams from last season. The first round of the DFB Cup will take place from August 15th to 18th and August 26th and 27th. The further rounds have also already been scheduled.

Mandatory dates in the DFB Cup

The second round is scheduled for October 28th and 29th, the round of 16 follows on December 2nd and 3rd. The quarterfinal games are for the 3rd/4th. and 10/11. February, and the semi-finals will take place on the 21st/22nd. April 2026. The grand finale is finally scheduled for May 23rd. It should be mentioned at this point that the bonus distribution for the new season is not yet known. Last season, each club received an impressive 209,500 euros for reaching the first round of the cup. Below are the rewards in the further rounds:

round premium
1st round 209,500 euros
2nd round 418,900 euros
Round of 16 837,800 euros
Quarterfinals 1.675 million euros
Semifinals 3,351 million euros
Final loser 2.88 million euros
Final winner 4.3 million euros

A particularly fascinating chapter in the DFB Cup is the successful participation of the third division teams in the last competitions. Arminia Bielefeld was the last club to reach the cup final as a third division team. Excitingly, the club has already knocked four top division teams out of the competition this season, including Bayer Leverkusen, the defending champions, and can therefore look back on an impressive performance. This is the first final in Bielefeld's history. Who would have thought?

Third division teams and their successes in the cup

Bielefeld's success story is not the only one in the DFB Cup. In history, three other third division teams have already reached the final:

  • Hertha BSC II (1993) – verlor gegen Bayer Leverkusen (0:1)
  • Energie Cottbus (1997) – verlor gegen VfB Stuttgart (0:2)
  • Union Berlin (2001) – verlor gegen FC Schalke 04 (0:2)

What is particularly noteworthy is that Bielefeld is also the first third division team to repeat in the semi-finals. Last year, 1. FC Saarbrücken was the only fourth division team to reach this round, and the year before that the team successfully completed their journey to the semi-finals. Stories like these characterize the DFB Cup and show how many surprises it has in store.

Overall, we are looking forward to the draw and the upcoming games in the DFB Cup. Who will advance to the next round? The fans will be excited because one thing is clear: anything is possible in football!
