Countdown to the Ikano Bank City Marathon: Wiesbaden in sports fever!
In just a few days the time has come: the 4th Ikano Bank City Marathon will take place in Wiesbaden on June 28, 2025. Preparations are in full swing and to date over 4,500 athletes have already registered to compete on various distances. The event, which has developed from a small midsummer run into a full-fledged city marathon, is a highlight in the Hessian event calendar.
The organizing Sporthilfe Wiesbaden e.V. and the organizer Kai Walter from WEC GmbH are also pleased with the high number of registrations. Particularly noteworthy: The half marathon already has over 2,000 entries, making it the strongest field of participants. Registration for the other distances, including the marathon, the 10 km, the 5 km as well as a children's race and various relay and company races, is possible up to two hours before the start.
Diverse routes and new encounters
The marathon starts on Wilhelmstrasse and takes runners through the picturesque Nero Valley and the spa gardens, past the Kurhaus. The finish is on Schlossplatz, where the athletes are expected under floodlights for the “Midnight Finish”. Kai Walter states clearly: “The registration numbers exceed those of the previous year, and our security concept has been adapted.” The route also offers a real challenge over 42.195 kilometers: over 90 meters of altitude have to be overcome per ten kilometers.
A special highlight is the school class run, which takes place on June 27th and is fully booked with almost 2,000 participants. Dr. Gerhard Obermayr from Sporthilfe emphasizes how important such events are for the image of Wiesbaden. In addition to the sporting dimension, the marathon also brings with it a great sense of togetherness, which strengthens the community.
Running enthusiasm on a growth path
The enthusiasm for running events in Germany is constantly increasing, as a current study shows. In recent decades, the number of running participants has increased significantly and more and more people are discovering the joy of running. This is also reflected in the registration numbers for the Wiesbaden Marathon. Over 500 starters have registered for the marathon course – a number that has increased fivefold since the first event. This development shows the growing interest in sporting challenges and communal experiences.
The organizational preparations are extensive: Particular attention is paid to accessibility in order to enable everyone interested to participate. Philipp Siebert from Ikano Bank emphasizes the positive development of the new location in the city center and is already looking forward to the event. After 2025, the naming partnership with Ikano Bank will end, but the marathon will continue - a good sign for the long-lasting tradition of this event in Wiesbaden.
Can we look forward to a great event? Yes, with music, lights and a colorful range of food trucks, the finish area on Schlossplatz becomes a festive stage for all participants and spectators. The motto “Whoever moves, lives” not only promotes sporting activity, but also celebrates the attitude to life in Wiesbaden.
