Young cyclists in Taunusstein: stone attack by young people!

Terrifying incidents took place in Taunusstein-Hahn on Friday evening that startled residents. Two children, a ten-year-old and a twelve-year-old, were riding their bicycles on a dirt path near the “Im Obergrund” street when they were attacked by two teenagers. Fortunately, this attack, which was carried out with a stone, ended lightly as the children's injuries were not serious. The twelve-year-old fell and sustained minor injuries, while the ten-year-old was hit in the back of the head with a stone. Rescue workers attended to the children on site, who were uninjured, but the shock is deep.

The two attackers rode e-scooters and spoke to the children before threatening them with the stone. The Bad Schwalbach police have not yet been able to catch the perpetrators, but describe them as 14 to 15 years old with distinctive physical characteristics. The first perpetrator is described as being around 160 cm tall, of normal to strong build, with dark brown hair and wearing casual clothing consisting of a T-shirt with a skull motif and short gray trousers, while the second perpetrator has a slim build and light brown hair and was seen wearing a white T-shirt and black jeans. The police are asking the public for information and can be reached on (06124) 7078 0. The FFH reports on the worrying situation.

Focus on juvenile crime

The attacks on the two children are linked to a worrying increase in youth crime in Germany. A current report from Statista shows that 2024 reached a peak of around 13,800 cases. This is more than twice as high as in 2016. Young people between the ages of 14 and 17 and young adults between the ages of 18 and 20 are particularly affected. Psychological stress caused by the Corona measures as well as various risk factors among young people seeking protection are considered to be the reasons for this worrying increase.

Crime is predominantly committed by boys, which is attributed to hormonal circumstances, acquired behavior and traditional role models. There is a public discussion about the need to reduce the age of criminal responsibility or to introduce harsher punishments in the juvenile justice system. Nevertheless, it is emphasized that preventive measures, especially through child and youth welfare, are necessary to prevent criminal careers.

Attacks on queer people

The incidents in Taunusstein are not the only ones that have shaken the region recently. Five young people were arrested in the Main-Taunus district who are suspected of being involved in a series of robberies and dangerous physical injuries against queer people. The Hessenschau reported that at least eight attacks had been reported in the last few months. The perpetrators lured their victims to meeting places via dating platforms and then attacked them.

The police have called on the public to report possible additional victims and point to a special contact point for queer people in the West Hesse police headquarters. This has been set up since 2010 and offers support for those affected.

Recent incidents highlight the challenges facing our society. It is becoming increasingly important to develop preventive and supportive measures to protect and support both children and marginalized groups.
