Waste disposal in the Rheingau-Taunus: Fusion brings big changes!

Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis, Deutschland - The waste disposal in the Rheingau-Taunus district faces significant change. As the FAZ Untertaunus. This measure aims to counteract both increasing costs and high administrative effort. So far, the Rheingau waste association has been one of the oldest institutions in the region and has been able to preserve its independence to this day.

In the Rheingau, 54,000 garbage cans are emptied annually and a total of 11,000 tons of residual and bulky waste and 4,600 tons of organic waste are generated, which are transported to Singhofen for disposal. There are still much more problems in the Untertaunus Communities, here almost 14,500 tons of house and bulky waste and 8,500 tons of organic waste come together annually. The upcoming change will be caused by the expiry of disposal contracts with the waste disposal company Knettenbrech + Gurdulic at the end of 2028, from January 1, 2029 the in -house waste management of the district (EAW) will take over the disposal in the seven municipalities.

advantages of the fusion

With the merger, a public law agreement between the seven Rheingau municipalities and the Rheingau-Taunus district is required. Some municipalities have already decided to change, and the district council also approved the project. District Administrator Sandro Zehner (CDU) was pleased with this solution, which, among other things, brings with it the advantages of waiving double structures. Michael Heil, the EAW manager, promises a reliable garbage collection to the 65,000 citizens of the Rheingau and expects economic advantages through public tenders.

The waste disposal is supported by modern solutions. Owners of inhabited land are obliged to join the municipal waste collection. The residual waste bins, equipped with a microchip, enable the precise recording of the emptying and help to calculate the basic fee for waste disposal. This fee not only finances the Ground Service, but also additional services such as the bulky waste, special waste collection and green cutting collection, such as the EAW informed.

sustainable perspectives

In the future, the construction of an industrial plant for fermenting organic waste is planned, which will cost an estimated 35 million euros. This facility, which will use around 800,000 inhabitants in the region, can process up to 60,000 tons of organic waste a year. The generated biomethangas should either be fed into the Wiesbaden gas network or sold to industrial buyers. This not only optimizes waste disposal in the region, but also a sustainable contribution to the energy transition.

The upcoming merger and the associated innovations not only promise economic relief, but also a step in the right direction for an environmentally friendly waste management in the Rheingau-Taunus district. The regional actors have shown a good hand and are making an important sign in the future.
