New managing director at TSV Speyer: Rüb takes responsibility!

TSV Speyer 1847 e.V. is facing an exciting new beginning: Andres Rüb will be the new full-time managing director and club manager from July 1, 2025. He will succeed Andreas Kochner and end a transition phase at the club. Rüb, who was born in Aachen and grew up in Speyer, has volunteered in the club's handball department for years. Club chairwoman Angelika Wöhlert is enthusiastic about the decision and sees Rüb's experience and commitment as a great benefit for the club community.

After studying architecture in Stuttgart and a stay in Hofheim am Taunus, Rüb returned to Speyer in 2014. In terms of sport, he comes from a volleyball family and brings valuable knowledge with him through his role in the Rheinhessen-Pfalz handball association. Rüb is also deeply rooted in sport in his private life, as he is married and has three sports-loving children. In an initial statement, he expressed his anticipation and confidence in the new task: "I would like to be the contact person for the problems of the departments and members and strengthen the club's identity and the sense of community."

Holiday camp for young handball players

While the club's leadership wants to break new ground under Rüb's leadership, TSV Speyer is already in the middle of organizing a holiday camp for young handball players. New organizational approaches are tried out in order to further develop the experience from almost 30 years of camp organization. Matthias Kornes, an active coach instructor, will support the team that looks after this small community of athletes.

One particularly motivated helper even took five days of vacation to actively support the camp. Such voluntary work is becoming increasingly important these days if you look at the current trends in German sport. A study by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz shows that the proportion of people involved in sports clubs fell by almost 10 percent between 2014 and 2019. However, the importance of volunteering remains undiminished, with tens of thousands of volunteers set to take part in major events such as UEFA Euro 2024.

Volunteering in sport

The study also points to the increasing need for sports clubs to create sustainable structures in order to retain volunteers in the long term. Over 80 percent of volunteers report that they express values through their work, and at the 2024 European Handball Championships, the desire to perform will be the main motivation. The changes in club life are noticeable; Both flexibility in commitment and the promotion of intrinsic motivation are crucial in order to create a strong team of volunteers in the future.

With the imminent takeover of Rüb in the management and the active involvement of TSV Speyer in the holiday camp, it is clear: a breath of fresh air is coming in here that could drive the club in a promising direction. At a time when the Olympic Games are being hotly debated politically and social developments are accelerating, it is important that sports clubs position themselves well and secure the support of their members and volunteers.

We look forward to the developments at TSV Speyer and will continue to monitor the progress.
