B49: Expressway between Limburg and Wetzlar - Now at 130 km/h!

The traffic landscape in Hesse has changed noticeably recently. On July 1, 2025, the B49 in the Limburg-Weilburg district was upgraded to a “motor road”, which brings a number of important changes for drivers. Loud rhein-zeitung.de Cars are now allowed to speed along the route at up to 130 km/h and trucks at 80 km/h, although certain speed limits remain in place in certain areas such as Ahlbach, Offheim and Weilburg due to the lack of hard shoulders. This new regulation underlines the importance of the B49, which is considered the main artery between the A3 near Limburg and the A45 near Wetzlar.

This road not only connects Limburg with Wetzlar, but is also an important link between Koblenz and the cities of Wetzlar, Gießen and Marburg. Over 45,000 vehicles, including almost 4,600 trucks, use the section between Limburg and Ahlbach every day. In some areas of the B49, traffic levels can be even higher, making it one of the most important transport axes in the region.

Expansion projects and future developments

The expansion of the B49 is a long-term project that extends over several sections and at the end of which performance and traffic safety should be further improved. According to information from hessen.de The construction project is divided into a total of 13 sections, each of which provides for specific improvements.

  • 6a. Abschnitt (Weilburg bis Löhnberg): Ca. 3,7 km, Anbau von Seitenstreifen und Umbau des Mittelstreifens.
  • 7. Abschnitt (Löhnberg bis Biskirchen): Ca. 3,2 km, Teilverlegung eines Gemeindeverbindungsweges und Neubau der Kallenbachbrücke.
  • 8. Abschnitt (Biskirchen bis Tiefenbach): Ca. 3,2 km, planfreier Ausbau der Anschlussstellen.
  • 10. Abschnitt (Leun bis Solms/Niederbiel): Ca. 4,5 km, Umgestaltung der Anschlussstelle Solms mit einem Kreisverkehr.
  • 11. Abschnitt (Anschlussstelle Solms – Solms/Kloster Altenberg): Ca. 3,2 km, Neubau einer Straßenbrücke und weiterer Infrastrukturmaßnahmen.

The planned construction project is not only a technical undertaking, but also has far-reaching economic implications. Since at least 2022, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport has been committed to eliminating bottlenecks in the transport network and ensuring the quality of the transport infrastructure, as in Transport Investment Report is presented. These investments in road and transport networks are crucial to promoting personal mobility and economic progress in the region.

With these extensive measures, the B49 will not only become the “second motorway” for the region, but could also serve as a practical boost for the local economy. It will be exciting to see how traffic will develop once the expansion work is completed and what other projects are still in the pipeline.
