Rüsselsheim receives award as a pioneer in digital senior assistance!

On July 24, 2025, the city of Rüsselsheim received a special award. Digital State Secretary Stefan Sauer was there to recognize the city as one of 70 “Di@-Lotsen bases” in Hesse. This initiative supports older people in developing digital skills and navigating the digital age. The volunteers, who act as Di@ pilots, are available as multipliers to help with questions about digital topics and applications.

A central goal of this project is to strengthen older people's self-confidence in using modern technology. The program not only includes the teaching of basic knowledge, but also the practical use of digital technologies in everyday life, such as online bookings or communication with doctors. During the event, Mayor Patrick Burghardt highlighted the challenges that digitalization brings with it for seniors.

Commitment and support

The city of Rüsselsheim benefits from the committed work surrounding the “Digital in Old Age – Di@-Lotsen” project, which is led by the Hessian State Chancellery. Since the launch in July 2021, a total of 70 bases have been set up in 25 districts and independent cities in Hesse. These bases are not individuals, but institutions that coordinate training and provide technology. New people have already been recruited in Rüsselsheim to strengthen the Di@-Lotsen team.

Marius Volkmann, the base coordinator, reported that training courses for the pilots are offered regularly. These are not only financed by the Family Ministry, but also supported by the Digital Ministry, which provides technology support for the various bases. In addition, the state foundation “Together in Hesse” works closely with the Di@ pilots to ensure comprehensive advice and support.

A look into the future

The project impressively shows that older people are also capable of learning digital skills. With flexible and comprehensive support from the state of Hesse, the project ensures that digital participation is accessible to all seniors. The use of the Di@-Lotsen is not only free, but also low-threshold and close to home, which makes participation much easier for older citizens.

During his visit, Digital State Secretary Sauer emphasized the immense importance of this initiative for the social participation of older people. It is clear that digitalization not only offers challenges, but also opportunities for a self-determined life in old age. The commitment of the volunteers in Rüsselsheim is a shining example of a successful community campaign that builds bridges between generations and breaks down digital barriers.
