Darmstadt fights against stickers: New film for traffic signs in the test!
A lot is happening in the science city of Darmstadt when it comes to traffic safety. Since October 12, 2025, the city has been testing special anti-sticker and anti-graffiti films on selected traffic signs. This measure is intended to curb the unwanted stickers and graffiti that often obstruct the view of important traffic signs and increase safety on the roads. Paul Georg Wandrey, head of the mobility department, is confident that the new films will make it easier to remove stickers and paint smears, without leaving any residue and the associated costs of replacing a sign.
For the pilot project, 60 selected traffic signs in the city were put through their paces. According to those responsible, the legibility of traffic signs is of enormous importance not only during the day, but especially at night. The special reflective film on these signs ensures that they remain clearly visible even in the dark. Another problem is the fact that every defaced or covered sign poses challenges for the city administration and increases the risk of accidents.
Advantages of the new films
The big advantage of the tested anti-sticker and anti-graffiti film is its finely structured surface. This ensures that stickers cannot stick permanently. Thanks to a certain level of solvent resistance, the removal of graffiti is also made much easier. If the pilot project is successful, it could have a significant impact on the maintenance of the approximately 30,000 traffic signs and 2,000 signposts in Darmstadt.
Another plus point? The lifespan of the signs could be extended to up to ten years by using the films. In addition, the film meets the requirements of CE conformity and the requirements of DIN EN 12899-1, making it a reliable choice. In addition, retroreflection, which is crucial for visibility at night, remains unaffected.
Economic and ecological aspects
The economic advantages should not be underestimated: the films promise reduced cleaning effort and thus save the city's resources. And with regard to ecological sustainability, the city of Darmstadt's decision also has merit. Reduced wastage of road traffic signs not only brings economic savings, but also protects the environment.
The films can be used in a variety of ways and are suitable not only for road traffic signs, but also for safety markings, information signs near football stadiums, event arenas as well as for company signs and similar applications. This shows how far-reaching the use of this technology can be ( Brewes, Ilka chemistry ).
The future of traffic signs in Darmstadt could be less dirty and more cost-effective if the pilot test is convincing. The city administration assumes that if successful, all new traffic signs will be equipped with these special films. There is something to be said for road safety and the cleanliness of our streets!
