Hikers from the VHC Lauterbach climb the Rhön: a peak full of enjoyment!

What motivates the hiking enthusiasts at VHC Lauterbach? On June 26, 2025, 25 members and guests went on the annual Rhön hike in bright sunshine. The fantastic weather attracted numerous participants to an adventure that began at the Wasserkuppe, the highest point in Hesse at 950 meters. The route stretched over around 13 kilometers and took hikers not only through beautiful landscapes, but also past places steeped in history.

On the route was the radome, a relic from the Cold War era that tells many interesting stories. The hikers also made a photo stop at the Aviation Monument, where a majestic eagle perches on a basalt cone. Despite the sharp wind on the heights of the Rhön, which died down as we descended over the northern slope, the summer temperatures were a welcome change.

Retreat in a family atmosphere

The hikers followed the premium hiking trail “Hochrhöner”, whose diversity and characteristics are particularly reflected in the high altitudes of the Rhön. The route led via Abtsroda to the “Enzianhütte”, a popular destination since the 1950s. After a refreshing drink break, the hikers continued on their way to Milseburg, which at 835 meters is also known as the “Pearl of the Rhön”. Given the heat, only four participants decided to climb the summit, while the majority of the group took the direct route to the Lothar-Mai-Haus, a place of conviviality and enjoyment.

The final break offered a selection of food and drinks that contributed to the good atmosphere. Here, in the homely atmosphere, the hikers were able to reflect on their freshly gained impressions and experiences together.

A perfect ending

After a successful day, the participants were picked up by the bus from the Steens hiking car park late in the afternoon, which took them back to Lauterbach. The hike was not only the sporting highlight of the year, but also a wonderful social event for everyone involved. With its variety of hiking trails, such as the numerous extra tours that meet the quality criteria of the German Hiking Institute, the Rhön always offers new challenges for hiking enthusiasts. Information about other routes is available, for example, at rhoenfuehrer.de, where a large selection of varied hiking trails awaits nature enthusiasts.

The VHC Lauterbach hike remains an impressive example of how diverse and enriching hiking in the Rhön is. For anyone who wants to take on a new challenge, the route from the Wasserkuppe to Milseburg is just the thing - even if the tour, as described by [Outdooractive.com/mobile/de/route/wandel/rhoen/wasserkuppe-milseburg/1494683/), is not without its difficulties.
