Fire inferno near Eudorf: tractor fire causes major fire brigade deployment!

On Friday afternoon, the Alsfeld volunteer fire department called for an extraordinary operation. A tractor was on fire in a stubble field between Alsfeld and Eudorf. The first emergency services arrived at 2:18 p.m. after the alarm with the keyword “FLKW” (burning vehicle) was raised. On site, they were confronted with a fire that was already widespread and spread over around 10,000 square meters. City fire inspector Daniel Schäfer assessed the situation so that he adjusted the operational keyword to “FWAL2” (surface fire with spread).

Around 35 firefighters were on duty, supported by another 30 personnel in the staging area. The tricky situation was also made more difficult by a false alarm: While the fire department was dealing with the tractor fire, another emergency call was made about smoke in the forest near Hattendorf. Fortunately, this turned out to be a false alarm.

Technical failure as the cause of the fire

According to the initial investigation, a technical defect could have been the cause of the tractor fire, which then also triggered the fire in the dry stubble field. This is not surprising, as there are technical defects, especially in the electrical system, according to reports therlo.de, one of the most common causes of tractor fires.

The water supply at the site was particularly problematic as there was no permanent water source. The fire department was forced to use fire engines and water tanks to provide sufficient fire-fighting water. A shuttle service has been established to make water delivery efficient.

Fire protection in agriculture

These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of fire protection in agriculture. In case of vehicle fires, it is advisable to have a 6kg ABC powder extinguisher on board, as listed by experts. This type of extinguisher is suitable for fires involving solid, liquid and gaseous substances. For optimal protection, regular maintenance is recommended, including checking the electrical system and cleaning the engine compartment.

As a rule, technical defects in agricultural machinery are dangerous. The collected crop waste and oil residues are potential causes of fires, which can turn out to be risky, especially in hot weather. Moisture is also a critical factor as it promotes electrical defects.

In summary, this fire brings the monitoring and maintenance of agricultural vehicles into focus once again. The damage caused by such an incident can be enormous. Insurance companies offer different types of coverage, from partially comprehensive to fully comprehensive, with the latter offering more comprehensive protection. The residual value solutions for fire tractors on platforms are also worth considering.

We are glad that no one was injured during this operation and would like to thank the emergency services for their quick action. The incidents highlight the challenges that agricultural businesses face and the importance of preventive action to avoid such events.
