On Friday afternoon, the Alsfeld volunteer fire department called for an extraordinary operation. A tractor was on fire in a stubble field between Alsfeld and Eudorf. The first emergency services arrived at 2:18 p.m. after the alarm with the keyword “FLKW” (burning vehicle) was raised. On site, they were confronted with a fire that was already widespread and spread over around 10,000 square meters. City fire inspector Daniel Schäfer assessed the situation so that he adjusted the operational keyword to “FWAL2” (surface fire with spread).
Around 35 firefighters were on duty, supported by another 30 personnel in the staging area. The tricky situation was also made more difficult by a false alarm: While the fire department was dealing with the tractor fire, another emergency call was made about smoke in the forest near Hattendorf. Fortunately, this turned out to be a false alarm.
Technical failure as the cause of the fire
According to the initial investigation, a technical defect could have been the cause of the tractor fire, which then also triggered the fire in the dry stubble field.
