Fountain of Remembrance”: A moving sign for the future in Rotenburg!

In Rotenburg, a significant signal against forgetting will be set: the inauguration of the “Fountain of Remembrance” will take place on September 14, 2025 at 3 p.m. The fountain will be inaugurated in front of the Jewish Museum on Brauhausstrasse and is intended to pay respect to the victims of the Shoah and to serve as a memorial for peaceful coexistence. The stainless steel fountain will be equipped with eleven gargoyles, which is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also symbolically represents the cross sum of 614 - an allusion to the Jewish philosopher Emil Ludwig Fackenheim's required "614th Commandment", which appeals to the memory of the Holocaust victims. This was reported in detail by [HNA].

The event will be enriched by a large number of guests of honor, including the descendants of Jewish families, such as Gidon and Nava Süsskind-Levi from Tel Aviv and Evelyn and Dave Hill from England. What is particularly noteworthy is that Ittai and Avital Malbin-Katz from Tel Aviv, both honorary members of the Jewish Museum Support Group, will unveil the fountain. The event also receives support from musical performances by the Bebra trombone choir.

Cultural supporting program

The inauguration will not only include speeches from Mayor Marcus Weber, Dr. Heinrich Nuhn, District Administrator Torsten Warnecke and the former Bundestag member Michael Roth, but also by Gidon Süsskind-Levi, who speaks as a descendant of a Jewish family. His wife, Nava, will deliver a prayer in Hebrew and English.

After the official inauguration, visitors can expect a colorful cultural supporting program in a festival tent, which is organized in collaboration with the Ukraine Aid and Cultural Association Bad Hersfeld-Rotenburg. Here, those present can look forward to Ukrainian music as well as dance and singing performances, accompanied by delicious culinary specialties.

A symbol for the community

The new fountain replaces the previously dismantled Moses sculpture by Martin Schaub. The population of Rotenburg and the surrounding area is cordially invited to take part in this special inauguration ceremony. There is also the opportunity to take part in guided tours of the Jewish Museum from 4:15 p.m. to learn more about local Jewish history and address the topic of remembrance. The project is an impressive example of how important historical topics can be kept alive in today's world, which is supported by Spektrum by mentioning Fackenheim's philosophy.
