Green hydrogen filling station in Hünfeld opened: a new environmental hero!

Michelsrombach, Hünfeld, Deutschland - in Michelsrombach, Hünfeld, has been opened a new hydrogen petrol station, and the future of traffic looks greener than ever. The project is operator of the project ABo-Energy, which is entirely committed to linking wind energy and hydrogen production. Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok and building manager Uwe Jahn were also present at the ceremonial opening. Here you not only set a new energy standard, but also a sign of environmentally friendly traffic.

And this is how the whole thing works: Power is generated from a nearby wind turbine at the location, which is then converted into hydrogen in the electrolyser. This is done by a process in which water and electricity are combined, with the by -products of oxygen and heat being created. In this way, the hydrogen filling station is supplied with green hydrogen, which is provided for trucks and buses. Over 3 tons of hydrogen have already been produced and the capacities are huge: up to 50 vehicles can be refueled every day, with a truck on average 33 kg of hydrogen. This enables ranges of 450 to 700 km.

an ambitious project

The total cost of the project amounts to over 30 million euros, of which almost 12 million euros are covered by funding. This corresponds to about 60 percent of the total investments. Subscription-energy founder Dr. Jochen Ahn emphasizes that this project is unique in Germany and shows a good hand for sustainable energy. In optimal conditions, the wind turbine can generate up to 11 million kWh per year, while the electrolyser can process up to 23 million kWh. For the time of the full load, the company is buying additional electricity.

But that's not all! Mayor Tschesnok announced a special highlight: on June 27, a star trip with several trucks and buses will be organized to demonstrate the petrol station. The next hydrogen petrol station will be put into operation in Eichenzell on Friday. ABO-ENGY also plans to retrofit the petrol station for cars that can currently not be refueled.

innovative technology

As far as the technology is concerned, the gas station uses two dispensers with a level of pressure of 350 bar. Both alkaline electrolysis (AEL) and polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis (PEM) are used. These methods are well established in industry and run in a temperature range of around 60 to 80 ° C. The market launch of hydrogen drives is also promoted with over 40 partners who are merged in the "Hywheels" initiative to decarbonize the traffic sector.

It can be expected that hydrogen use will result in annual CO2 savings of around 4,200 tons, which not only benefits the environment, but also gives climate protection an enormous thrust. On the project's website, interested parties can find further information and learn how this innovative project in the region was realized. A webinar about the construction progress is also planned, where you can find out more about the developments.

The Hünfeld project therefore has the potential to become a pioneer in hydrogen technology and to completely change the face of traffic. It remains exciting how the situation will develop and what new possibilities open up to promote environmentally friendly traffic.
