Future of used clothes: Strong network for sustainability in Eschwege!

On October 7, 2025, committed players from waste management, municipal institutions and second-hand initiatives met in picturesque Eschwege to discuss the future of used clothing collection and waste prevention. As part of the “Re-Use” network meeting, the focus was on the question of how used clothing and other items can be kept in circulation for longer. The HNA reports that this is one of the central tasks of the “Re-Use Hessen” network, which has been the first nationwide since its founding in 2021 Initiative of this kind applies.

The meeting was organized by the Work, Recycling and Design Support Association, which has been running the used goods centers in Eschwege and Witzenhausen since 1999. This association not only supports social participation, but also offers jobs subject to social security contributions and helps people get back into working life. Andrea Kommer and Dirk Gröling represented the Werra-Meißner district and northern Hesse and enriched the event with important regional perspectives.

Together for a sustainable future

The “Re-Use Hessen” network aims to bring the reuse of materials into the focus of society. A social and sustainable circular economy is to be created through close networking between municipal actors and non-profit companies. The Re-Use Website describes that the platform promotes exchange and collaboration between existing initiatives and thus strengthens the appreciation for resources and people. Keynote speeches were also given in the group, including by Dr. Philipp Kanzow, head of the environmental department, and Julian Auer from Humana Kleidersammlung GmbH.

In his presentation, Auer pointed out that many companies have ceased operations due to a lack of profits from used clothing. This problem highlights the need for a strong alliance for sustainability and the expansion of re-use offerings. The network plans regular meetings and information offerings to support the municipalities and continually develop new measures. A lively exchange is expected that addresses the existing challenges in the area of waste management and shows options for action.

A strong network

The founding of the network in July 2025 in Frankfurt am Main shows how serious the members are about integrating the topics of reuse and sustainability into society. The committed actors strive to create synergies through their collaboration and to create the framework conditions for a functioning circular economy. The collaboration is supplemented by support from the Hessian Ministry of the Environment and technical support from the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology.

Overall, the meeting reflects the basic intention of ensuring a sustainable future with a good hand and creating a strong awareness of the importance of reuse. The network will certainly continue to provide important impetus in the coming months and launch exciting initiatives to further anchor the topic in society.
