Tree planting strengthens Eschwege-Mühlhausen: friendship through greenery!
November 10, 2025 was a very special day in Eschwege and Mühlhausen: the 37th anniversary of the town twinning was celebrated with a tree planting campaign. On this festive occasion, the two cities planted a total of three trees to underline their long-standing bond. In Eschwege, an American bridle tree and a red ash tree were planted in the Unit Alley on the Werratalsee, while in Mühlhausen the Unit Grove was further expanded.
The tradition of tree planting was started seven years ago, to mark the 30th anniversary of the partnership. Since then, every new plant has symbolized the friendship, stability and future orientation between the two cities. “The more trees are added, the more visible the symbol of our solidarity becomes,” said the mayor of Eschwege. This fits in well with the environment, which focuses on climate resilience, as the avenue is planted with a careful selection of appropriate tree species that are better able to withstand drought and heat.
A green sign for the future
The unity avenue is not only a beautiful sight, but is also seen as a symbol of partnership, sustainability and responsibility. In times of climate change, it is essential to strengthen urban green spaces. Healthy vegetation plays a crucial role in climate-friendly transformation, as emphasized in a recent BBSR publication. However, there are some challenges: Not all plant species are able to adapt to climate-related disturbances. It is therefore important to select climate-resilient plants in order to be able to enjoy a flowering avenue in the future.
The success of the tree planting campaign depends not only on the selection of plants, but also on proper care. Special knowledge is required to assess the adaptability of plant varieties. This is intended to ensure that the city not only maintains green lungs, but also creates a vibrant space for biodiversity and quality of life.
A commitment to the community
The initiative not only stands for green oases, but also for social cohesion in the region. With every tree planted, the cities' responsibility grows and becomes more vibrant. It's a great opportunity to work together to protect the environment and raise awareness of sustainable development. As the organizers emphasize, the aim of the campaign is for citizens to get involved in the project and thus build a personal connection to nature.
The tree planting campaign is a refreshing example of how town twinning can become even more important in more sustainable times. With their commitment, the cities of Eschwege and Mühlhausen show that the growth of friendship and greenery in the region can go hand in hand. Over 30 years of town twinning and a thriving unified avenue are just the beginning - the best basis for an even greener future.
