The increased number of thefts on construction sites is not an isolated case. A study by Bauwatch shows that two thirds of the construction site managers surveyed noticed an increase in construction site crime in 2023. What's shocking is that 80% of those surveyed said they experience theft on their construction sites at least once a year. The majority view safety on construction sites as a “low priority” and call for better planning of safety measures before construction begins.
Recommendations to improve security
The Bauwatch study makes four recommendations for action to prevent theft: visible security measures such as camera towers and fences, good lighting on the construction site, regular training for employees and an individual assessment of the threat situation for each project. The construction industry itself has been severely affected: experts estimate the annual damage caused by theft to be over 80 million euros.
This makes it clear that times are anything but rosy for building contractors. Security and protection must finally be a priority because this is the only way to significantly reduce the risk of theft and vandalism.
